Low milk supply..

Has anyone else struggled with this? And how did you know it was low. I have low hemoglobin, so they warned me at the hospital that mine will be low. My DD fusses and is obviously still hungry after I am done nursing. She will easily eat 2-3 more oz. from a bottle after nursing from me.

Is there anything that you did to help it? I am taking fenugreek and am not really seeing a major difference. I am currently nursing for 15-20 mins per side, then I am feed her more if she is still hungry, and then I pump to try to stimulate more milk production.

My milk didn't really start coming in until day 10, because of the blood loss I had and in turn my very low hemoglobin. So I had to supliment from the beggining. She does just fine going from the bottle to nursing.

Any advice or tips are appreciated! Thanks!

  • I take Fenugreek 3x day.  Are you eating well and drinking lots of water?  I know it's hard, but sleep can also effect your supply.  I've read about people taking Reglan, too.

  • I was dealing with the same thing. My milk supply was low from the beginning, nothing was working to help increase my supply. I was supplementing about 2oz from the bottle at every feeding and then pumping to increasy my supply. I tried everything you did, the pedi encouraged  me to keep trying. DD wasn't getting enough from me and after a month and seeing no change, pedi advised me just FFing. I was heartbroken, but cared more about DD being healthy and gaining needed weight. I know some women never get the needed milk supply, hopefully that isn't the case for you. Keep trying and don't give up!

  • I've had low supply from the beginning too (I saw a LC who weighed DS to see what he was getting and it was only 50% of what he needed for a feeding), it got better with fenugreek and blessed thistle but I still have to supplement at night for some reason, he'll never get enough to make him happy and let him sleep at night.  I was devastated at first but now realize that it's not my fault and I need to do what keeps him healthy.  I have been able to get down from formula 50% of the time to only once or twice at night so it is possible!  I pump also and that helps with supply too.  I am considering taking a nursing weekend, just nursing him every 2 hours whether he wants it or not LOL that is supposed to help supply also.   I also am going to try power pumping (10 min on, 10 min off for an hour) for a few days and see if that helps.

Just wanted to let you know you're not alone!
