Camping recs in W. Michigan needed

Has anyone ever camped on the west side of the state with their kids?  Do you know of any must see/do activities?  We're planning on taking the kids (they'll be 2 and almost 4 at the time) out to the west side of the state in June/July.  We have friends out there, so it's just a good time to go see them and extend the trip and do some stuff with the kids.  I'm a terrible Michigander, though - I've barely left SE Michigan. So, I need some tips. TIA!

  • Depends on how west you are talking.  If you're talking about the Battle Creek/Kalamazoo area, then I would recommend Fort Custer to you.

The camping is slightly overpriced there, but it is beautiful and I'm sure you would really enjoy it.  My husband and I have spent a lot of time at that park.

There's also Yankee Springs, which is a little closer to Grand Rapids, though still a ways away.

  • If you're going to the west side of the state, you should definately take the kids to the Sand Dunes!
  • What area are you looking to camp near?  Are you thinking you want to be be near Lake Michigan or is that not important?  I am orginally from the west side and there are so many options.
  • We go to Grand Haven every year, but we rent a house there. It's a very cute town, but small.  Beautiful beaches, and there's a campground right on the beach.  Not sure about camping in that much sand though.  In muskegon there is Michigan Adventures, and it's great for kids of all ages.  It's about 45 mins north of Grand Haven, they have a water park that is prefect for little kids and babies.  That's my son's favorite thing to do, were taking DD there this year for the first time.  I do highly suggest renting a cabana, it's the best!  You are sort of off from everyone else, you get food service to you (no long lines for food), you are guaranteed tables and many chairs and chases to lay on.  It's gated off from everyone else so we just pushed the stroller to the back and let our son takes naps too.
  • I would go to Muskegon State Park. It is right on Lake Michigan and Pere Marquette state park, which is arguably the most beautiful beach in our state. Also, Ludingston state park or Grand Haven state park are good options too.
