Recommend sneakers for new walker?

Does anyone have any recommendations for sneakers for an 11 month old who's about to walk any day now? I've been putting him in Robeez soft soled shoes (or similar off brand ones). But he just transitioned to the Toddler room in daycare, and the lead teacher is "strongly urging" me to get him in more substantial shoes, in large part for safety reasons. Everything I've read has said to keep them in soft soled shoes while they are learning to walk so they can feel the ground more, so I haven't bought any other kind of shoes yet.

So I was looking at the Robeez Tredz, which appear to be sturdier. Are there any others you recommend? I don't want to pay a fortune if I don't have to, but I also don't want to get crappy shoes that he stumbles around in. It's so hard to shop online and there are no stores near us w/baby shoes really. So I'd love suggestions, thanks!

  • Pedipeds are a little thicker on the bottom than the Robeez, I would keep them in that until they are better walkers. The realy sneakers just seem to heavy and hard to walk in and DD has been walking for 6 weeks

  • My DS wears the Robeez Tredz and Stride Rite and both are good.  I think the Stride Rite shoes are little sturdier and the price isn't much different.
  • I second the pedipeds.  They are much more sturdy than Robeez, but are still soft soled.  Zachary walks great in them.  He's been wearing them for about six months because I couldn't keep socks on his feet.  I also think they are worth the money because they hold up so well.
  • Pedipeds are great...I love them. We also got DD a pair of the old fashioned white walking shoes (the kind that support the ankles) that she loves.
  • We have the same rules at our DC.  Right now DS is wearing Stride Rite early walkers.  They are SUPER soft and flexible.  We got them at the outlet for less than $20.  I also liked the Robeez Treadz but they didn't have any in DS' size.  They also had them at the outlet for $18.

  • my DD has stride rites, i am pretty sure they are the early walker kind.  they are not sneakers, but they are thick soled and excellent.  and if you asked her (and she could answer) they make an awesome sound while kicking the footplate in the stroller! :)
