Please tell me DD's not the only one banging her head on purpose!

DD's new crazy strange bad habit is bonking her head on the floor or the couch when she's upset.  She'll even hit her head with her hands (that she learned from a 3 y/o at the sitters)

Please tell me your DC does that and what your reaction to them is.

  • I ignore it.

He does it all.the.time! It's so annoying, but I have noticed it stops quicker if I ignore it

  • Parker does this too, as well as biting himself when he's really had it.  I ignore it also per pedi's advice and he stops pretty quickly.

  • Kaleb does it too. In fact I think he does it for fun sometimes. It's really wierd! He bangs his face on the ottoman and just laughs...it's crazy!
  • My DD also did this - I thought I might have been the only one with a girl head banger, it seems more common in boys.  Anyway, we ignored it and she only kept it up for a couple of weeks.

Her pedi suggested putting her in time-out if it didn't let up on it's own, but we didn't get to that point.  The main thing is not to draw a lot of attention to it, so I vote for ignoring.

I know it's hard to see them do that, but I've also read that it's self-limiting behavior and that if it starts hurting, they will back off.  Good luck!
