Just sheets and crib skirt?

Is anyone JUST buying these 2 items in terms of bedding? I am so torn that DH and I actually had a "fight" about it.  I started telling him how much the different bedding choices I like would end up costing ($200-300) and then I realized he was right in that we really only need sheets and a crib skirt.

I know he IS right and we certainly don't need a bumper (i'm not sure I even feel comfortable using one - I go back and forth) and we're going to have so many blankets (that can't even be used IN the crib for some time) that spending money on a quilt seems silly too.

But then I see all these cute bedding sets (like the PBK dot one) or custom made ones on Etsy and feel like I'm missing out or doing something wrong.  Will our crib look too plain and boring with just cream sheets and bed skirt?

Here is our inspiration pic again to give you an idea of the look I am going for (except we'll do all black furniture and opposite walls: taupe w/ a cream tree). image

I see all these cute nursery pics on here and just wonder if I will have made a mistake if I just go the simple/cheap route of sheets and skirt, but it does seem like a waste of money.

Anyone else doing this or having these thoughts?

Re: Just sheets and crib skirt?

  • we went with pretty sheets and that is it - I even passed on the crib skirt because I am not convinced we need one. All the sets I liked came with a diaper bag (we would never use), a bumper (we would never use), a comforter (we could only use on the rocker and then once she gets older), and a sheet.  I could not justify spending money knowing we would never use 2 things and would rarely use a third...  But then again, I was upset that I could not get just the comforter from some of those super cute sets!

  • I obsessed over which bedding I liked the most just like everyone else does. When it came down to it, I couldn't justify the expense.

?I bought a white sheet and yellow sheet (we didn't know what gender our baby was) and never missed the big expensive set.

I bought one of the mesh crib bumpers. ?It wasn't gorgeous, but it kept my daughter's arms and legs in the crib at night and I didn't worry about suffocation.

?Maybe if you let your husband win on this one you can win on something else you really want??

    Good luck.?

  • I bought the whole set (well it only included skirt, sheet, & bumper) b/c the set I like wasn't sold as separates.  When I was considering going the PBK route I probably would have just bought the sheets and skirt, though PBK is fairly reasonable so I may have just bit the bullet.  I still don't know if I will use the bumper or not.  I love the look but that is a ridiculous reason to go against medical advice, however, I can't imagine she'll be able to roll over for a little while....we'll see.

  • I went through this with my daughter, and we ended up buying a 6-piece bedding set.  We ended up only using the sheet, crib skirt, and valance, so it was a waste of money to buy the whole set.

I decided that this time around it was silly to buy a bedding set since we don't use bumpers and the comforter wouldn't get much use.  A few weeks ago I went to Target and bought a printed sheet and matching crib skirt.  I'm going to also buy some new plain crib sheets to match, and will probably spend about $40-50 instead of over $200 on bedding.

  • i'm with your DH on this one... i couldn't justify the $200 on essentially a matching crib skirt.  reviews said the sheet that came with the set was awful.  so instead i registered for everything else that matches the set-- lamp, hamper, wall hangings, switchplate, valance, trash can.  that should be plenty!  we're getting sheets and crib skirt in the same color scheme... and we got the cozy wedge bumper which is supposedly ok to use...

  • I've only ever bought sheets, crib skirt and bumper.  My DS would have had a bruised head without a bumper so it was a necessity for us. We did this same thing this time for the twins.  We bought sheets, skirts and bumpers.  It's so much cheaper and for us, we actually used what we bought.  And, your room will still look cute and decorated without all of the extra pieces, which can be overkill.
  • Thanks everyone. I am going w/ my original idea of custom Etsy bedding, but will only be getting a sheet (and I'll get extra baby gap organic sheets for only 19.50) and a crib skirt. :)
  • i learned the hard way about bedding - that it's a waste - b/c i got a full set for my DS and only used the sheets and crib skirt - and you change the sheets so much- you end up just using coordinating ones and not the pretty one the set comes with most of the time.

for the twins i just got crib skirts, coordinating sheets and the sage breathable bumpers. no need to waste more money on a set that will barely get used.

  • I knew I wouldn't use the bumper or quilt so I couldn't justify buying a whole set. I was afraid the room would look boring or incomplete without the bumper and quilt. I found a woman on Etsy who was willing to make a bed skirt with coordinating window valances out of really cool fabric. I bought plain blue and cream sheets at BRU. With that and some wall decorations, it's not even apparent that there is no crib bumper or quilt. Don't waste your money on a full set.

  • If there's one thing I would have done different - it's the bedding.  I registered and received 2 beautiful bedding sets from PBK.  They were the most expensive things on my registry.

    -  I didn't like the bed skirts so my mom ended up making some to replace them.

    - The bumpers (sooooo cute) have been on and off the cribs.  They're proving to be more of a distraction for the boys - they pull on them and try to climb on them.  They're better off off.

    - I love the sheets but have used ones I purchased at Target just as much.

So, I just wish I had thought thru it a bit more (of course, some people use their whole thing so different strokes...).  I would have registered for sheets and gone from there.

  • I'm having same arguement with myself :) (DH doesn't really have a preference)  I don't really want to spend the money to get a set...that would come with a quilt that we'd probably never use...

I'm thinking of just buying some sheets...and then making a blanket/quilt. And doing without the skirt.  Even if we buy a set I probably won't use the skirt.  And I'll probably buy a bumper indiviually online or from Babies r us.  They a cute brown one I like.

  • We are doing sheets only, not even a skirt. (I think skirts look funny with Jenny Lind cribs.) I know it is hard to resist, but I would way rather spend that money on other nursery things. I have spent a lot of time looking at nursery tours on Apartment Therapy and the things that make a nursery cute are not the crib bedding, it's everything else.
