Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Remind me it's not nice to make fun of baby names...

on boards full of pregnant ladies.  I am having problems biting my tongue.

I've been lurking on first tri, second tri, and baby names today and I swear to God I'm like 3 seconds away from posting a PSA along the lines of:  "There are no bonus points given if you replace a "y" with an "i" or vice versa, double up on consonants unnecessarily, or get "creative."  And by "creative" I mean name your kid something where 50% of the people who meet him or her will be like "Um, no really... What's your name?"

So take your Ashhli's, your Raidyn for a girl and Raiden for a boy, your Addysynn's, your Danniel's, and such and check yourself into the "Really?  I mean, seriously?" clinic.

Re: Remind me it's not nice to make fun of baby names...

  • Go for it. I mean, if you don't make fun of them now and stop their parents, they will be made fun of by the time they get to middle school, right??  So, really, you're just doing them a favor.Smile

  • i miss you.
  • Making up names using car names is something I have seen to like um really?
  • I once saw a woman with three kids that had random H's in their names. I can't remember them all, unfortunately, but one was Ehric.

    Um....Indifferent

And, everyone always used to ask me how I was going to spell Miles' name. "Are you going to use a Y?"

Uh, no. I'm going to spell it normal, thanks.

  • I know a Reiden, but she is from Norway and yes people do ask her constantly if that is her real name. But at least she has the whole "I'm from Norway" thing going on.
  • Ugh! I just looked at a few posts myself. Why do people do that? Just spell it correctly or you will put your children through hell! I mean, if you are pronouncing it the same, then spell it right. There could be 5 other Avery's in your class, but changing the name to Averi doesn't change anything except for other people's view of the children's parents=goofy.

  • The worst trend by far is the random addition of apostrophes (although I haven't seen that on this board--yet).  When I was teaching, I had so many kids with apostrophes it was ridiculous.  My favorite:

    Qua'lea'shai  (Kwae-lee-shah)

That was fun to turn into a nametag;o)

  • Eh, it's just the internet.  Make fun of them if you want to. :)

When I was a kid, I knew a girl named Joshalin.  Her parents didn't have a girl name, so when she was born, they just adapted Joshua.

The apostrophe thing can get annoying.  I understand if there's a reason for it - like in someone's family it's always been spelled that way or it's a favorite figure from a spiritual text or whatnot.

But once when I was teaching I had a student named "K'ta'lynn" pronounced like Katelyn or Caitlin.  Why the apostrophes?  Because, "My parents wanted to make sure people would pronounce my name correctly."  Ummmm... Really?  Well... yeah, EPIC FAIL.

  • The baby names board amazes me everyday.

Particularly when my daughter's name gets criticized there.  Really?  You want to name your kid after an Everquest character and you feel confident enough to insult someone else's (perfectly reasonable) name choice? Yesterday someone said the spelling "...'Madeleine' looks SO wrong."  Um, it's the traditional spelling, a$$hat.

  • umm don't ask me to remind you of any such thing. I wont. I fully believe in the power, right, and RESPONSIBILITY you have to save those children from their crappy parents.

Jeez, Tess.  You should have spelled it Maddylynn.

Edit:  Or perhaps Mahddylynne (so people know it's a short "a") or Mad'Eh'Lin so the pronounciation is made clear via apostrophes.

  • It's only not nice after the baby has been named.  It is your duty as a sane person to try to make some of these women see reason.

  • It always makes me think of the Bringing Home Baby episode where the dad couldn't say the little girl's name right, and the mom kept pointing to the wall where it was spelled out, and it was something ridiculous like Aydaryanna or something.
  • Agreed!?

I know two women named 1) Sigrid 2) Diessa (her mother made this name up, but I actually like it. Pronounced: "Dee-A-suh.")

Well our first choice was Maahdyllyne, but my BFF named her daughter Aahdyllyne (after I had told her the name, b!tch totally stole my spelling idea), so I couldn't use that, obviously.
  • I think it is your responsibility to save these children from those names. Raiden is apparently the name of a Japanese thunder god which I have to admit is neat....if you know that's what it is.

    The other names....uh, no :)

  • To me, it's a slight form of abuse. That kid has to grow up constantly spelling their name, pronouncing their name, and being made fun of. Why do that to your kid?! Just sayin'.
  • I think that PSA needs to be posted. After you post please link so I can go agree and watch the responses. TIA!
  • Raiden reminds me of the game Mortal Kombat.  The guy with the hat and the electricity that shot out of his eyes.
  • What annoys me the most are the Y's.

I like the name Caitlin spelled that way or Kaitlin. NOT Kaitlyn or Kaytlen or Kaytlyn.

I've seen it on this board. And yes, I'm the person that will intentionally write your childs name the way I like if I were a schoolteacher.

Kimi, will you be a school teacher? Please?

Could you at least help one correct papers for a while? Like when "Jehnniphurr" writes a good essay, you can write "great job, Jennifer!"?

  • I could do that. I've done it to kids whom we have attended their parties. Like Aleko turned into Alec, Cristol turned into Crystal and Jessica got the Latin spelling: Yessica. I'm never going to be invited back... whoops.
