DS has a cold

DS has a terrible cold...his first major one..ugh...he's all stuffy and won't let me use the nose sucker...any suggestions? ?I've been keeping the cool mist vaporizer on at night.

Re: DS has a cold

  • Em FREAKS out if I get the nose sucker near her, but there were a couple times where DH and I had to hold her and get some of the snot out there it was so bad. I used the hot vaporizer and found it helped, but I'm sure the cold on would have worked also (I have both from my bouts with bronchitis) but I prefer the hot one in the winter.

No fever or anything right? You just have to ride it out, at least that's what we've had to do. How old is your DS? The pedi told me that if I could get Em to drink a little bit of water (she was over 6 months) that it would help a little with the stuffy nose also.

Good luck! I hope he starts to feel better soon!!!

  • He's been on and off running a fever...the highest was 101...he's just over 15 months. ?I just read on another message board that someone's DS around the age of mine had a seizure due to a fever...so now I'm freaking out
  • If you can at least spray some saline in his nose, that will help break it up.   I've never been successful at the snot sucker.

As I revealed last week in another post, in desperation I have sucked the snot with my own mouth... effective and super fast.   Gross, but not "so" gross really.  Spit it out and move on.  :)

The vicks plug in things are good too - they put menthol vapors in the room.  Check to see if there's an age on them though.

I've also heard LOADS of people swear by Vicks on their feet under socks.   Again, I'm not sure if there's a lower age limit for Vicks.

Elevating one end of the crib can help too but only if your kid is pretty stationary.  Otherise, they'll just spin.

If he's old enough for benadryl, you can also use that to clear out his nose for him to sleep.  But don't try it in the middle of the night for the first time, because benadryl wigs some kids out.  Check with your ped on this one and for the dosing.

Edit:  Now I'm looking and your DS is over 1.  I'm sure you can do any of those things... But I'd check with your ped on the benadryl dosing.

  • Interesting... The Vicks on the feet thing... Who would have though!? I'll have to try that next time? Think it works for adults too? :-)

101 isn't very high...  plus, febrile seizures are pretty common and apparently scary for you, but not a big deal.   So don't let that stress you out.

Are you giving him tylenol or motrin?  If those help the fever go down, then just stick with them.   If the fever doesnt' respond to those, call the ped.   Also, when I called the ped yesterday about Ben's 102.5 temp, they said up to 102 is "productive" in that it is used to fight off whatever is going on.  Above 102 they said they really wanted me to keep him on Tylenol or Motrin.   And fever more than 3 days to call them back.

There's a bunch of fever info here:

You know how at 3AM you'll do anything to go back to sleep?  That's how an idea is born.

  • Yep...we've been giving him infant tylenol and that seems to help...thanks...I feel a lot better now
  • Poor Kylen! No fun sounds exactly how Livi was 3 weeks ago. I did the vaporizer in her room at night, vicks baby rub, got some Johnson and Johnson bath vapor stuff what ever I could think of. She wouldn't let me suck her boogers out lol no way wasn't having it. She had a fever as well and I gave her tylenol. I hope he feels better soon poor little guy it's no fun

Oh my god, I am dying at the thought that I might resort to this in the not-to-distant future!

  • Yeah my friend just told me that she was sleeping in one of those tanks with a "shelf bra" and her kid puked down it, so puke was all pooled up in it and filled it all up, but before she dealt with that, she got her kid undresssed and in the tub, so she was walking around with a puke filled shirt!  GROSS.  It's amazing how gross some of parenting can be.  :)
