Do drop-sides seem unsafe to anyone else?

I just don't feel like a drop-side crib could be as safe as a non drop-side crib. I mean I know they all have to meet the same safety regulations but I can just picture my kid standing up shaking the drop-side and it dropping and them flopping out. What sucks is my favorite crib is a drop-side. What does everyone else think about these?

i'm planning on getting a dropside. a few of my friends have had them and have had no problem with them. i'm also getting one because i'm short, and it will be easier for me to get the baby out of the crib.

Depends on the drop-side. the ones that are a simple lift and drop are a bit scary, imo.... but the old fashioned drop-sides and "safety" drop sides that require some balance and a leg to drop the side seem just fine. my mom says the safety and old fashioned ones were always good.

That said, Dad and DH are making the baby crib. And its NOT a drop side.

Plus, I clearly remember babysitting all during my teen and college years and could never figure out how to lower the damn crib sides, so I don't think they'll just come down from a baby messing with it.

My son was standing up in his crib shaking the rail today and it didn't budge. It seems very secure to me and honestly, I'm short, so we really didn't have an alternative to a drop-side crib. I can understand why you would feel the way you do, but after having used one, I feel confident they are safe.

Most of the recommendations I read have said to avoid drop sides if at all possible. I'm short, but I'll use a small sturdy step before I get a dropside.

I have a devil of a time getting my drop side to drop, so if a kid can figure it out, they are going to escape drop side or no drop side! On my cribs, you are supposed to push in way down lown on the side of the crib and push down while pushing in, and I cant imagine a baby or toddler reaching down that low, pulling in and down at the same time. And my 2nd born is a pretty naughty boy and no escapes from him yet via the drop side dropping.

We have a dropside that I have confidence in as well. In the two years DD has used it, she hasn't come close to getting it to drop down. I don't think my DH has figured it out yet, as he was struggling with it the other night when I asked him to lower it for me. To be honest I have never used it until recently. Now that I am getting bigger with baby #2 the dropside makes it much easier to get my DD in the crib (she stands to get picked up to get out, so I don't need it to get her out). For reference I am 5"5'.

I had one w/ both my girls--DH & I had a hard time getting the side to drop down. I never once worried about my kid shaking it down--it wouldn't happen because it takes a lot of strength to lift it off the thing & over to get it down...I could not see a little kid or toddler ever doing it. Maybe "I" forgot to put the side up a time or 2 but I never had the kid get it down. I am not getting a drop side this time, but that's because I wanted a modern style one w/ a drawer--I dread lifting the kid over the stupid rail all the time. Believe me it's the last thing you need to worry about.

I loved my dropside crib with DD. She NEVER was able to get the sides down while she was in it...no matter how rough she was.

I was going to go with a drop side crib because I just remember how hard it was to lay a sleeping baby down in the crib after you have to drop the matress down in a regular crib. But I just don't like the look of the dropside cribs. I say it like this, my mom put me in a drop side crib, and I came out okay, so I am sure that the crib is safe.

I've used a drop-side for 2+ yrs and it's never even crossed my mind that it mighy be "unsafe". I've seen him shake it (hell, I shook and pressed and pulled on it to "test" it) and there's no way it's budging. I am tall, and I cannot imagine not having a dropside. Kids get heavy, and there is no way in hell my back would stand for me hefting a 30+ pound toddler (or even a 20+ one, and DS was 20 lbs well before his first bday) up and over an undropped side more than once a week. I can barely tolerate doing it once a week, even! Plus I think standing on a stepstool to heft up a heavy kid sounds way more "dangerous" than a dropside- I could totally see DS unexpectedly heaving himself in my arms and me slipping off and twisting an ankle or dropping him or something.

The ONLY thing I regret is not getting a drop side crib. It is easy when the baby is little and the crib is set high but once you lower the crib all the way down and the baby is bigger, it is very difficult to put in a sleeping baby.
