XP: Resignation Letter Help... Becoming a SAHM.

Can anyone help me figure out how to write a resignation letter for work?  I have decided to be a SAHM, and plan to finish working at the end of the month.

I want to be cordial, but direct, so that they don't try to ask me to stay.

Has anyone ever done this before?  I could use a little help!

Re: XP: Resignation Letter Help... Becoming a SAHM.

  • Mine was short, sweet, and to the point... honestly only three sentences.  I wrote to confirm my resignation as X (my position), effective Y (date).  I then said simply that I had chosen to remain home to care for my child.

Really, you don't need to give any more information than that.  But you do need to prepare yourself with a simple, courteous "no thank you" if they should ask you to stay.  I "stuck to my guns" by just saying that it was my heart's desire to be at home.

    Hope that helps!

  • Dear:

Please accept this as my letter of resignation from position of _________, effective _________ (date).

I appreciate the opportunities for personal and professional development that have been presented to me during my time here (something along those lines).

If I can be of any assistance during this transition, please let me know.

    Sincerely,

Short and sweet.  You don't need to give a reason why you're leaving.

  • Mine was almost word for word as pp stated.  Then when I gave it to my boss, I told him verbally that I was going to be staying home with DS.  He was very supportive and I had a wonderful parting and still go back to visit over two years later.

  • Ditto pp.  You don't have to get into details when explaining why (people can argue with specifics), it's best to just keep it at "to spend time with my family".

Also, for me the resignation letter was just a formality after the fact.  The notice was verbal first.  I've actually done this twice, plus had to explain my resignations going back to the job market, and for all occasions I've phrased it as "this (is/was) what I need(ed) to do for my family" and that's been accepted without further explanation.

    Best to you!
