GD mama's come in...

I took my 3 hour today but my doctor and nurse don't have much hope for me. Type II diabetes runs rampant on both sides of my family, and my one hour glucose was a 195. Out of curiousity, what was your one hour results, and can you lend any suggestions in terms of diet so I can get started. The dr. will have my official results on Monday, and then it will take a couple of days to get my glucometer, and I was hoping to start some of the diet changes/modifications now.

 TIA ladies :)

  • My 1-hr was 215.  The diet is manageable, just inconvenient.

The "condensed version of the diet":
Limit your carbs to 175g per day. Eat a protein with each meal. And eat 3 meals and 3 snacks per day.

Try to eat "good carbs", whole grains, fruits and veggies.

  • Have no fear, the diet isn't that bad.

The PP is right - always have protein with each carb.  Try and eat 3 meals, 3 snacks, all small.

    Easy on the carbs.

  • I was diagnosed with my 1 hour GTT only (I had GD before)?result were 171.

As for the diet, I have to count carbs and be keen on portion control (read a lot of labels), 15 to 30g for snacks and 30-45g for meals.  3 meals and 3 snacks a day.

  • I have not changed a thing except for adding in the 3 small snacks. My 1-hour number was 155.
  • My 1 hour was 187.

As pp's said, the diet really isn't that bad.  I can still eat just about anything I want (within reason) just monitor portion size, lower carbs, and higher protein.

This is my second time around with GD so didn't even take the 3hr test.  The diet isn't bad and like everyone said, eat 3 small meals a day with 3 snacks and limit your carbs.  Remember - dairy is counted as a carb so be careful of that if you are a cheese eater or drink milk daily.

  • My 1 hr was 198. I never did the 3 hour.

  • I found the best way to manage my GD was regular little bits of exercise.  Even a walk around the block would knock 20-30 points off my blood sugar count.  Do that a couple of times a day (which it was always welcome to get away from my desk att work) and you'll have no trouble managing your numbers.

    Good luck!
