Baby Names

Aubrey for a boy?

Several weeks ago, my husband and I decided on Aubrey as our new baby's name since we have decided not to find out the sex and Aubrey is unisex.

Aubrey was originally only a boy's name back in the 1920's, my husband has a cowboy great-uncle named Aubrey.

I love the idea of Aubrey as a boy's or girl's name, but now DH is saying he thinks it may be too girly.

What do you think?

Re: Aubrey for a boy?

  • Definitely no. That boy would be so scarred.

  • Really? You think so? Even with all of the male Kelly's and Cary's and whatnot?
  • I've said it before that I like/certainly don't mind unisex names, but this one screams girl to me.
  • No, sounds too feminine.

I really do think so. This one has just moved so totally into the girl category... I've definitely never heard it for a boy before.

  • My nephew's name is Aubry (no E) .

I like it better for a boy than a girl and yes it was originally a Boys name. He is 9 years old and loves his name. Plus I have a great musician friend here in Nashville and his name is also Aubry. Go for it!

  • Wow! That's great! A young man with Aubry as a name! I like it with no e, and it does make it look more masculine on paper too.
  • I think with so many girls who are named Aubrey, he will probably be embarrssed to have a "girl" name. I know in the past it was more unisex, but I really don't think it is anymore.

My in-laws wanted to name their son Loren if he was boy. I know it used to be a popular male name, but with all the Laurens there are today, they are very glad they went with Wyatt.

    Blank!
  • I am obviously in the minority, but I've only known male Aubreys...

  • I know 2 male Aubreys - and one is 13 months old. It doesn't sound like a girl to me.

  • I think Aubrey for our generation is a girls name.

But its making a comeback as a boy's name.  I've heard of several younger boys with the name.

And I like it.  even if it is so close to my name it makes me do a double-take ;)

Please, please, please, don't name your son Aubrey! Even if a few boys have this name, the majority are girls. He will be made fun of.?
  • My dad's name is Aubren. It never seemed to feminine, but some people do mistake it for auburn  the color.

  • Aubrey for me is totally unisex. My grandfather's name was Aubrey, and my sister is considering it for a girl.

Honestly, i know Aubrey is legitimately a name, but it always seems like someone just doesn't know how to spell and/or pronounce Audrey correctly.  So i don't like it for girls either, but definitely not for a boy!

In seventh grade I was friends with an Aubrey, and for the longest time I called her Audrey, until she finally yelled at me. We were friends all through high school, and I really like that name a lot more than Audrey now.

  • I think its too girly for a boy
  • Honestly? I'm kind of smack dab in the middle.

When I hear it my initial thought is 'girl,' but after finding out it's a boy name. . . it doesn't sound too femenine.

Sorry if that was no help.

  • my grandfather was named Aubrey and he was not girly!
  • Only if you plan on having him come home crying from school most days.
  • I think this one is totally in the girl category now, sorry. It's one of those that has turned so girly that he will resent you, JMO. Ashley and Kelly used to be boy names yet majority are now girls- so really they are no longer unisex (even though I know 1 male Kelly but he is 27 not 5). A name like Payton is still ambiguous so that could go either way. I just don't think Aubrey fits into that category for his generation, sorry.
  • My great grandfather's name was Leslie.  John Wayne's name was actually Marian.  The genders associated with names change over time.

That is, he'll totally get beaten up in grade school.

  • Def. not a boys name.
  • Definately don't see it as a boys name. At all. Sorry.

  • UPDATE: We did end up using Aubrey, but as a middle name. His full name is Cole Aubrey. I think it sounds very cowboy, just like great-uncle Aubrey that he is named after.
