If your DC doesn't eat....

How do you stop from freaking out??

DD has lost weight since her last appt, and has decided that eating is for wimps (she is eating right now, but I don't want to jinx it!).  She does do breakfast (for now), but hasn't had much for dinner the past few nights.  It stresses me out!  Any suggestions??

Re: If your DC doesn't eat....

  • DD's not much of an eater, but I don't let myself freak out as long as she's continuing to gain weight.  She's only 17lbs at a year old.  She keeps going between the 3rd and 5th percentiles on the growth chart - as long as she stays on the chart, I have to tell myself she knows what she's doing.  If she loses weight I'll probably be a crying mess!

As for what your DD is eating, can you maximize the calories?  I mix sour cream, butter or cream cheese into a lot of DD's food.  She eats lots of avocado too.  I also only give her milk in a sippy - no juice or water b/c it's the best option nutritionally.

  • DS has always been a horrible eater.  He is 20 months now and he really didn't start taking more than a few bites at each meal until he was around 15 months.  Even now, he still has many meals where he will just.not.eat.  I have found the best thing to do is not fight it...if he doesn't want to eat, I let him out of the highchair and will offer again a little later.  If he still doesn't want to eat, I assume he's not hungry and we move on.  I *try* not to freak out about it since DS seems happy and healthy (although very small).  But, I know, easier said than done.   I am always so jealous of my friends whose DCs eat anything and everything.
  • I freak out every time DS misses a meal due to busy day with DH, I keep telling him DS needs to be chubby by his next Dr.'s appointment.  I am just a big fan of try try again.
  • ds doesn't eat more than MAYBE a half a jar of food a day if he even eats that!

so, he still gets about 25-30 oz of formula a day for his calories and i just offer food throughout the day.  he also gets some rice or oatmeal in his bottles to add calories.  we are trying to use sippy cups, but that isn't working too well yet either...

  • DS's eating habits get worse throughout the day.  He normally has a bowl of oatmeal or a waffle, a snack before morning nap (fruit or a cereal bar) and 1/2  a sandwich for lunch.  After that, its pretty iffy.  Some nights he'll clean his plate, others he sits and plays while we eat and refuses anything we give him.  At his 15 month appt. he was 75% for weight and off the charts for height so I guess in the long run he must be getting what he needs.  We give him Enfamil vitamin drops also, maybe check with pedi if that's an option?
