How much milk do you think your DC gets when BF? and how often do you BF?Right now I am not BF because I just do not produce enough so I am pumping trying to get my supply up. I add BM to his formula so that he is getting some amount of BM.?A little background, when we went to his first pedi appointment ?(5 days after delivery) DS went from 9lbs to under 7lbs and some change, way to much weight loss. I was just nor producing enough which is why I am pumping and he is on Formula with added BM in it.?Right now it seems that I only get about 1oz sometimes less every two-three hours when pumping. I pump for 20min a time. He eats about 2- 3oz of formula every 3-4 hours. I am just curious as to when I might be able to give him enough with just my breast. At this point I am thinking I still need more milk and that if I try I will have to follow up with formula. Plus he does not always want to stay on the breast which makes me think that either he is not getting enough from the breast or that maybe he is not sucking hard enough to get it, no idea.

Re: Xp: BF amount/Time
I would consult a LC and feed with an SNS/catheter so you get the nipple stimulation of him sucking and he is satisfied because there is definitely something getting into his mouth. Having him on the breast will stimulate production far better than any pump.
I'm curious as to the massive weight loss. Could it be a difference in scale and not true weight loss? I'm sure he lost some, but that is a lot considering many mom's can take 5 days for their milk to come in and still not have that big of a loss.
It is more bottles to wash, but I would also offer the BM and formula in seperate bottles. If you mix a bottle of 1oz BM and 2oz formula and he only drinks half of it, you've just wasted BM. Feed the BM first, then formula. All that is secondary to trying to keep him on the breast though. A LC would be able to help figure out why he's not staying on the breast. It could be something as simple as gas or just the normal newborn sleepies.
