My induction was Saturday Feb 21 at 8pm. When I got there they check my cervix and I was only a fingertip dilated, not effaced at all. So they inserted cervidil around 9:30 p.m. to soften my cervix and I had to keep it in for 12 hours. They removed the cervidil at 9:30 the next morning and check me, I was at 1 cm 50% effaced.
They started me on a very low dose of pitocin around noon. Even at a low does it caused contractions that were about 3-4 minutes apart and a minute long. They checked me at 7:00 pm and I was only 2 cm 75% effaced, so they discontinued the pitocin and reinserted cervidil to try to further soften and thing my cervix. The plan was to restart the pitocin the next morning at a high dose to start labor.
Around 9 p.m. I started having very strong contraction that were 3-4 minutes apart and about a minutes. I had no pain med yet because I wasn't to start pitocin again till the morning. I was so tired and in pain I was crying and begging for something so that I could sleep through the night. They gave me a dose of nubane which helped relax me some, at about 10:30 I was having really strong contractions again and was throwing up, so they decided to check me. I was 3 cm and completely effaced so they removed the cervidil and decided to let me labor on my own.?
I was in so much pain I was begging for the epidural, because I hadn't slept they let me have it even though I was only 3 cm, they had wanted to wait until pitocin in the morning. I got the epidural around 11:00 pm and it was the best thing ever. All my pain immediately went away and I got some rest. Around 12:30 am I started complaining that the epidural wasn't working because I was having horrible pain in my hips. So the nurse checked me and I was 10 cm with only a small lip left. She couldn't believe it so she had another nurse check me also. They immediately called my OB to come for delivery. The OB got here shortly and the nurser were rushing around trying to get everything set up.?
I started pushing just after 2 am, I have a really narrow pelvis, so they thought it was going to take me 2-3 hours to push him out. I had been pushing for 45 min to an hour and wasn't making much progress, so my OB had left and was wondering around in the hospital. Then somehow I finally figured out how to push effectively and he started coming out fast. Once he got through my pelvis he was out in 4 pushes. He turned his head as he was being pushed out so I tore towards the side of my leg instead of straight back. He came out at 3:14 a.m. was 7 lbs 2oz and 20 inches long. After the birth my OB told me she thought I was going to have a c-section because she didn't think his head was going to fit through my pelvis.
He scored a 9 on both of his apgars, but had low blood sugar due to my GD. Luckily he didn't have to get an IV, but I've been having to supplement him with formula to keep his blood sugar up which is making trying to establish breast feeding a challenge. He also had to spend quite a bit of time in the nursery under a warmer because the blood sugar issue was giving him difficulty regulating his temperature. But he is doing great now.
