Let's define spanking

Lots of people were shocked by the # of "pro-spankers" in the earlier poll.  When I say I'm for spanking I'm not talking about an all out beating but just a swat on the tush, hard enough to get the message across but not so hard to really hurt and I would never use a belt or spoon or anything.  And even then only when all else has failed.  I'm assuming that the other "pro spankers" are thinking the same.  Does a swat on the tush = spanking?

    For me it does. I will never use a spoon or belt or anything to spank.

    To me yes - a swat on the tush = spanking.  That said, I am pro-spanking if the circumstances warrant it...  Some children respond to timeouts, etc. which is great - some don't however and harsher form of punishment may be apporpriate in those cases. 

    There is a distinct difference between a spanking and a beating.  Beating is obviously not okay, but I see nothing wrong with a hand to the bottom for particularly bad behavior...

    Yes, a swat on the tush = spanking.. there is a big difference between spanking your child, and beating your child.

    I think using anything other than your hand is wrong.  But I have a history, so I'm inclined to think that.  I do however think that when nothing else works, a swat on the behind is fine.  But I do think that all other options should be attempted first.

    spanking = disciplining out of anger. you lose your cool and you hit your kid.  this is what i've experienced first hand and in observing moms who spank.

    Yep, swat on the behind=spanking. I agree with the pp though. Only when it's needed, other things work for some babies. My DS def needed spankings but DD seems like she might be sensitive enough to not need them. When we tell her 'no' she cries or gets really pouty, but she listens. DS would have ignored and gone on with whatever it was that wasn't allowed. So yeah he needed it but we will see with the next 2. I would love it if I didn't have to do it.

    Not always true, but that is the case most of the time. I spank DS during the deed he isn't supposed to be doing so he gets the point. Not because I'm angry but because sometimes he still doesn't remember or understand why he is getting into trouble now. My neighbor schedules her daughters spankings. When other things haven't worked and she resorts to that. She talks to her DD and tells her she is going to get one and then turns her over her knee. It is after the fact and discussed with her DH 1st. So thats def not out of anger

    IMO - a swat on the butt is just that, a swat on the butt. It could be one or two but it's just a swat.

    I was raised to think that a spanking (or whoopin') involves a belt or a switch of some type.

    I don't plan on spanking Morgan the way that I was spanked. Not because I think it is cruel but because it is was not an effective form of punishment.

    My mom spanked us but we still misbehaved. I think it made her feel like she was teaching us a lesson but all she taught us was to not get caught the next time. I doubt that was her point.

    Anyway, I hope to play mind games with Morgan to get her to bend to my will so hopefully I won't have to spank her.
