Babies: 9 - 12 Months

s/o How much did/will FF cost you?

In responding to the post below about breastfeeding costs, I thought of asking this question.  I've read that it can cost $1000-1500 for the first year and am wondering how accurate that is.

1.  How much do you think it'll end up costing for the first year?
2.  Did you need to purchase any sort of special formula because of allergies or other problems that came up?

Re: s/o How much did/will FF cost you?

  • I got formula through WIC. But it would have cost about 1800 for 12 months if bought out of pocket. I BF the first 4 and supplemented for one, so I guess I would have spent probably 800 up to this point.

    She's on GS natural cultures.

ETA: I gave away most of my formula checks since I only bought about 10 cans myself, so I didn't account for that, or finding it on sale.

I als use drop ins, but i have no idea how many we have used. The bottles were all shower gifts and hand me downs.

  • I'm so thrifty with buying formula that it hasn't cost us that much. I refuse to buy it if it's not on sale and I always use at least a $5 formula check. I love when Target sends out coupons, because then I use a formula check, manufacturers coupon and a Target coupon together and it only ends up being about $12. I also buy Ready to Feed for daycare. The containers of RTF are usually $5.50-$6, and with a $5 formula coupon I end up spending about $2 a month on formula for daycare.

I would say that all together it's maybe cost us $600 for the first year.

  • 1. We pay about $20/week (we use a store brand)...so around $1,000 for formula. ?Plus whatever we've invested in bottles and nipples, but that cost could also be applicable to BFers who pump.

    2. Nope?

  • $3960 for one year - and that is not including the preemie formula we bought their first month that I mixed in with their pumped bm.
  • Well DD's formula costs $28.99 and we go through 1 per week right now

She will be on formula for 10 months (wasn't on for June/July when I was BFing)

So for the 1st year we will end up spending about $1200-$1250

We started on Goodstart but was spitting up a ton so switched to Similac Isomil but the prices were the same

  • $25 every week and a half so that will give me $800-$900 for formula for the first yr. I BF for the first 10wks. DS is only at 6oz every bottle but as he gets older he will start to drink more.

  • I estimated $720 for 6 months buying Similac at Sam's Club.
  • For the first three months, I mostly breastfed, so we didn't need much formula. But ever since she's been just on formula, it's cost us about $100 a month. So yea, I'd say it will end up costing us anywhere in between $1000-1500 by the time she turns one.

  • 30 bucks a week for a big can that lasts a week so, $120 a month and 1$440 a year.  That doesn't include the pre made 8oz bottles I buy for the diaper bag and traveling.

  • We use generic and started generic very early, since she was on Gentlease and it was pricey. So for 12 months, about 4 weeks a month, at $14, it was $672. But adding in coupons and about 12 sample cans or so from various sources for free, it will probably be about $600 when all is said and done.

That said, I wanted BFing to work, am still sad it didn't, and would have preferred to not have spent ANY money on formula...oh, well.
