Pregnant after 35

Had an amnio today

My DH and I decided to go for the amnio after all, as we really need to know for sure about Down's. Although yesterday's good ultrasound reduced the risk, the only way to know for sure is through amnio. I was very nervous, not for the pain but for anything going wrong.

The procedure was so easy - it didn't hurt at all. The dr said it was the easiest amnio he had done in a long time. I literally felt a little prick and then a little pressure and that was it. My DH was there and watched on the ultrasound screen (I didn't want to see the needle go in - too weird) and he said the baby was not even close to the needle at all. I am so relieved, I just feel everything will be all right.

  • SO happy to hear that your amnio was uneventful as mine was.   Now just lay around and enjoy everyone waiting on you all day :)

    (it's the little perks :)

  • Glad to hear that it wasn't too bad.   I'm having mine on Thursday.   How long before you get the results?   How long did the procedure take?

  • I'm glad everything went well.  I hope you get your results soon.

  • The procedure took less than a minute, before that they looked at the baby for maybe a couple of minutes via ultrasound to see where it is. I had a discussion with the genetic counselor before that took most of the time where she explained the test they do and how the results might look. Results will be available within 10-14 days (they need to grow the cells in the lab and that's why it takes some time).

  • Hi there- glad to hear it went well. Did you have something questionable with the NT results that made you want to have an amnio? I ask because I haven't been to the specialist yet (we go Friday for the NT) and I am not sure what to even expect. I don't know at what point they advise you to go ahead and have an amnio, etc, so I feel really clueless.

I hope your amnio results reach you quickly and that your baby is happy and healthy :)

  • Jennifer - my first trimester screens (bloodwork plus NT scan) came back with an elevated risk for Down syndrome (1:148). If the risk is higher than the risk of a miscarriage through an amnio (1:300), they recommend an amnio - but you don't need to do it. DH and I talked about it for a long time and decided we would rather not have a baby with Down's, and that it was worth the slight risk of a miscarriage, so we decided to do the amnio. I am glad we did - I am pretty sure the results will be good and we can be assured that our little girl is fine.

  • I'm happy to hear your amnio went well. I've been struggling on deciding whether or not to have one so it helps to hear that yours went so smoothly.

I feel exactly the same way!  I'm glad you feel good about things.  I hope the wait for results is not too anxious for you.

  • Thanks- that makes perfect sense. I wasn't sure what the numbers and how they determined when you needed an amnio, etc. I am sure they will fill me in on all of that on Friday. It's a scary time. I am glad your test went will and look forward to reading about your happy, healthy results Smile
