I have a friend in Iowa who is a mom of 2 (4 year old and 4 month old) who is also a breastfeeding peer councilor for WIC.
A few days ago she was at her local Rec Center, where they have indoor play during the winter months. Her 4 year old was playing and she was discreetly nursing her 4 month old.
After she was done, the woman working there came up to her and told her that she couldn't nurse there and would have to go to the bathroom or leave! This goes against Iowa law!
Friend vented to her boss about it later that day. She was very angry. Her JOB is to promote breastfeeding and it's benefits to women who are less educated about it.
Before she knew it, the word had spread to a mom's group, to the newspaper and to their senator! A nurse-in was scheduled for today at the Rec Center.
Last night my friend expressed that she felt sick with nerves and didn't want to go, even though she thought it was very important to be there.
She did go, and was interviewed for the news paper! She said that the nurse-in did not feel staged. Women just nursed as needed.
anyway, i'm very very proud of her for standing up for her rights and for something she is so passionate about ![]()
