3rd Trimester

Any hypothyroid mamas out there?

Right before my bfp, i was diagnosed with very mild hypothyroidism (no symptoms other than longer cycles and delayed ovulation).  fortunately, my levels are well controlled on medication.  however, i have gained weight at an alarming rate (i'm up another 11lbs in a month). my doc is not concerned b/c bp and gluclose test were normal and i am measuring on target.  she told me to watch the carbs and cut out fruit and bread.  i was just googling and read that sometime women with hypothyroidism have problems with weight gain during pregnancy.  i was wondering if anyone had a similar experience.  i was very slender prepregnancy so my thyroid condition never caused weight gain.

Re: Any hypothyroid mamas out there?

  • I'm hypo as well but it has ALWAYS caused weight problems for me and I have always been overweight. I was diagnosed right before becoming pg and have since been taking synthroid, so I am kind of losing weight up to a point.?

    ?

I wouldn't worry about it if your doctor isn't concerned. Are you taking synthroid? ??

  • I have hypothyroidism - I'm on synthroid - my levels were WAY high - I didn't know I had it until I was pregnant (and pregnancy is supposed to make your levels better - so mine were probably off the charts before I was pregnant) - I gained alot of weight in the beginning but I've leveled off -

  • I am hypo and my levels have actually gotten worse through the pregnancy, they have had to up my dose. I however have gained weight very slowly this pregnancy. It affects everyone differently though. If your doc is worried they will order a blood test to check your levels, otherwise, some people just gain more than others... HTH
  • Yes, i am on synthroid...50 mcg 8X week (i take a double dose on sundays).  i am just a little shocked at another massive gain.  i wish i could say i gained it eating ice cream and pizza!  i feel like i am eating normally and pretty healthy. i have been been walking on the treadmill a few days a week.

my doc said it also could be fluid. she wasn't concerned b/c health-wise everything looks good.  so i am going to watch my diet until my next appt and see how i do. but man this sucks.

  • I'm hypo too - way hypo! I was dx'd just a month or two before I got pregnant, and we only got my numbers down where they should be after 1st tri.  I put on 10 lbs in 1st tri, but since then, have lost 30, but that's also because I have gestational diabetes and have been religious about the diet.  My doc also prefers that my numbers are almost hyperthyroid now, so I'm on 175mcg synthroid daily, which I think is a pretty high dose.

  • i have been hypo since i was about 18...i take levoxyl. it has never caused me to gain weight, and i was pretty petite pre pregnancy (5'1-105 pounds). so far this pregnancy, i have gained 35 pounds and i still have a month to go. i know its not a huge amount, but for my size it seems like alot to me.?
  • Wow PC-that is a pretty high dose.

Well I am also on synthroid, .88mcg. I haven't had to get my medicine adjusted, really everything is on track. As for my weight gain, I did have a huge gain in one month 11lbs but after that all is good. So I have gained a total of 24lbs, which is pretty good.

Just continue to eat pretty healthy, and if you want junk food make sure you have enough fiber in your diet to flush it all out. And lots of water of course.

If your DR isn't worried about it. I'd say you're fine.
