Buying things in general for baby?

When did you start? And what have you bought?

I have only purchased christmas onsies that were on sale from the gap. Thinking about getting the stroller this weekend. We love Bob's Revolution. Then next purchase would be the infant car seat. Too early?????

Re: Buying things in general for baby?

  • We have a crib and changing table (we bought them before we were pregnant because it was a deal we couldn't pass up).  Since getting my BFP we've just bought a few little outfits that were like 70% off.

  • With DS, I managed to restrain myself with most things until after the shower, and it was a good thing because we got almost everything we needed.

This time, I won't be having a shower, and there are a few things we'll want (like a double stroller), but I'm still waiting.  Mainly because I feel like I need more time to research stuff and figure out what we want/need.

  • It's really up to you.  We are not really planning to bring much, if anything into the house before the baby actually arrives.
  • Personally I have bought only things here and there that were on clearance, too (snowsuit, onesies, etc) but my mom on the other hand has bought so much already...diapers, wipes, bedding, so on and so forth.  However, I have rationalized that I only get paid so many times before this baby comes so each time I do, I try to go out and get a couple of things so that we won't be so overwhelmed around the time s/he gets here.  I'm sure everyone is different. I would just not recommend buying stuff that you would register for if you are going to have a shower.

  • i have been given a few little gifts as a "congrats," but have not actually purchased anything on my own.  i've definitely done some online searches for the best products as far as safety, etc, though.  i'm thinking that a lot of this will come from various showers, so i would really like to wait until that time comes so that it's free!

i can, however, sympathize with really wanting to buy stuff for the baby - that's for sure!!  i'm just going to try and hold out a little longer...

Your mom might want to hold up on diapers.  Some babies can only fit into certain brands of diapers.  My mom said when I was a newborn there was only 1 brand that fit and would hold everything in and when I got a little older I didn't fit into that brand anymore.  It would be a shame to buy diapers that don't work for your baby.

  • Does it count that I already bought my daughter's Christmas dress for next year? I couldn't pass it up since it was originally $70 and I got it for $7. :)

If you think something is a bargain and it's a relatively cheap item, buy it. If it's a larger-ticket item like a car seat or whatever and you can buy it (and take it back if you don't need it or it doesn't fit in your car, etc.), go ahead and buy it. Of course, many of those larger items you'll likely get at a shower or from your parents/in-laws.

If you don't know if something is a bargain and you can't return it, don't bother, in my opinion.

  • I am personally against buying expensive clothes for my kid.  I will be shopping at second hand shoppes for the baby.  That being said, it's very hard not to cave and buy itty-bitty cute things at target.  I did buy a tiny blue sweater with a whale on it.  It was so cute I wanted to vomit.

Hopefully I will get lots of stuff at the shower, and then we'll shop afterward.

OSU- That is our thought exactly! We want to pick up things each paycheck. That way it's not a huge blow to the account when baby is here. I don't think I will be getting a shower. :( All my family and friends are in the Midwest. Bummer... Oh well. Both parents are already buying stuff. So, that will help.

  • We have gotten some "cograts" gifts, but we have only bought the baby one thing so far which is a St.Patricks day outfit & bib for NEXT year!  We are going to wait on other things until we find out the sex.  Personally I can't stand gender neutral clothing (ducks, frogs, etc).
  • Someone on here recommended getting a store gift card and adding money on it whenever you think you want to buy something for the baby.  I'm not sure who it was, but I think it's a great idea.  My DH and I figured that if we add $20/week, we'll have approx $600 on it when the baby is born.  Then, you'll know exactly what you need.  Although, buying baby clothes/items is way more fun...the gift card is very practical.

This is what I plan on doing as well. Plus, I figure my mom and MIL will buy those vomitingly cute outfits for their first grandchild.

  • It's never too early to shop! One problem DH and I have noticed is since we don't know the sex of the baby yet, buying all green and yellow stuff kinda stinks. (mostly clothes). but we've already registered at target and babies r us. we registered at both because target doesnt have many options for car seats and strollers. we'll just add the clothes once we know the sex of the baby.
  • we bought two gender-neutral outfits but that's about it. we're also getting lots of gifts already. OH and wait, i forgot that we just bought a crib...
  • Well my job is selling childrens clothing/ accessories to boutiques. Sooooo, I have been stockpiling clothes for a few years now. Even before a baby was a thought. I know, I seem crazy. But I am not. How can I let all of these cute mini clothes go to waste?!

  • I have thought about this alot lately. I want to start to get diapers but I stop myself . Just not sure if I should be buying things yet.
  • Here's my take: our families are flaky in the gift department (see our wedding registry disaster as evidence), so we're going to buy things along the way, and then register for things that we would think most of them would agree to buy; AKA not the expensive stuff. ?

My parents are going to buy us something big - they'll tell us later - and I don't know what DH's parents are getting us.

And this next week we're buying this bouncer that I fell in love with. :)?

  • We bought our stroller at 10 weeks last time.  I still love it & can't wait to use it.
  • The advice I've given myself this time around compared to last time... but anything gear and accessory wise, but hold out on a ton of clothes.  We did that last time and depending on the baby's weight... they could wear an outfit once or twice if it's newborn and the baby isn't tiny.  I won't buy newborn this time.  0-3 only.  Unless the baby comes early... and then we'll be in trouble! I don't think I'd know what to do with a small baby!

  • if you can get it for a good price, it is never too early. ?Keep an eye uot for the sales.
  • I don't think we'll get much too early, at least not before we know the sex. I too plan on buying clothes and such second hand. We are actually planning on purchasing all the big items ourselves and hoping all the small stuff comes through from the shower.
  • I started by making a budget of all the things I needed includidng furninture and spent money each month.  Try not to be clothes your child will get so much believe me there is stuff my daughter almost never wore.  And also try to think about the whole 1st year many different things so I spent some every month obviously leave some stuff for the shower but some things people wont buy you.  You know your friends and family.  Use coupons and deals and also target and BRU gives you 10n percent so hold onto gift cards so you can make the most mostly I tried to save until then and then spend it make sense.  Try buying stollrt and car seat together.  Sign up for BRU mailing list they send coupons.  And don't buy anny formula or diapers because you don't know what your kid is allergic to.
