When do you take your child to the Dr? Need opinion...

I feel like I just don't know what I'm doing...I don't want to be the crazy 1st time mom that always takes their kid...but I don't want to not take her if she needs to go.  And I just don't know!

She is in daycare and pretty much has had a cold off and on all winter with little breaks in between.  She has another cold now with lots of snot and a cough now too.  She has been sleeping at night but waking up earlier than normal.  She does not have a fever.  It sounds like it's all in her chest with this cough... she isn't pulling at her ears or anything.

We are supposed to go out of town for the weekend tomorrow.  Should I leave work early to take her?  Or post pone trip?

  • Sounds like what my DS is going through now. I called to see if they wanted to see him and they did. He's had a cough since Sunday and it's just been getting worse. Is the snot green? That = infection. I say call, especially since you're going out of town..better safe than sorry. I didn't want to be that mom either BUT it's not about you..it's about the wellbeing of your child.

  • I would just take her and ease your mind.  There is no harm in taking her!!
  • If your going away somewhere I would prob take her in. DS was like that for a week and I got waterless humidifier from vics. There are little vicks pads that you put in it and it sents the room and that helped DS alot! Maybe worth a try

  • I am that mom and I would take him because if I didn't, he would get worse and be miserable.  DS went through that and his cold had turned into bronchitis (sp?).  Everytime he gets like that, I call and they want to see him to be on the safe side.
  • DS was the same way.  No fever, but lots of snot with coughing.  I took him in and we ended up doing the breathing treatments, which helped tremendously.

I would, especially since you're getting ready to go out of town and it would ease your mind.

  • Okay I am going to take her... my boss might not like it but it will make my husband and I feel better this weekend

    Thanks for the opinions...

  • Our ped. has walk-ins every morning where you can bring in a sick baby. We've taken DS in twice with a fever for more than a couple of days. Once it was an ear infection and the other time it was an ear infection and a minor case of bronchulitis/RSV. The first time was the morning we were due to leave town for 10 days at the holidays and I was really glad we went and could get antibiotics for the ear infection.

It put my mind to rest both times to see the doctor so if you think you need to go, go.
