Donating breastmilk for $

Hi ladies,

I'm asking this question for my SIL who has a 2 month old son. She's successfully breastfeeding my nephew and pumping besides because he will only nurse for 5-10 min on one side which leaves the other side very engorged. After she feeds him she can still pump about 5-10 ounces. Their freezer is overflowing with her inventory.

My brother asked if I knew of any place that would buy her milk and so I checked it out (Googled) and most places (hospitals) will take donations but will not pay for the milk.

Have any of you ladies gotten paid for bm donations? If so, where did you go? Any websites I can pass along to him/her?

TIA

  • If you are getting paid, it is not a "donation."

  • you prob wont find places that will pay. If people start getting paid for however many ounces they bring they are afriad that people will add water to it to get more ounce=more money. Sorry but she should feel very good about donating it.

  • I donate but don't get paid. I don't think I would be willing to take money for it. Kind of screams "black market breastmilk" if you ask me :)

Is it even legal to take $$ for it?

  • I think its illegal to get paid for BM. I have gotten reimbursed with replacement storage bags and the people I donate to pay all shipping costs. I would tell your sis to check out milkshare.org for more info and how to donate.

She isnt paying anything to produce the milk. Why should she get paid for it?? Thats just MO

  • I agree completely with all of you. If it were me, I would donate it just to help out. I'll tell them I checked it out and didn't come up with anything other than to just donate it. They can go from there.

Thank you for your answers. I appreciate it.

  • I agree with the others . i have donated plenty of milk. i just think it is very unethical to even consider taking money for it. it is a gift.
