Moms who had Group B Strep

I found out yesterday at my Dr Appt that I have Group B which surprised me, because I could have sworn at my appointment prior to that one, I was negative. But anyway, I know you get an IV..but do you get it immediately upon getting admitted? I would imagine it will prohibit me from walking around, sitting on a birthing ball, or doing anything to get myself moving along labor wise. True?

  • Not true.  You just have to pull the IV pole around with you.  I got the IV as soon as I was admitted because they want to get two doses into you if at all possible before you deliver.

  • i i was gbs + i did get an iv right away for antibiotics but it does not prohibit you from doing anything!
  • awesome. thank you very much. =]
  • Yes, I got the IV right away.  It didn't keep me from doing any of those things - in fact, I loved laboring on the birthing ball.

Because I was induced though, and needed to have constant fetal monitoring I couldn't walk around the hallways or be in the shower.  That was kind of a bummer.

  • FWIW: I was actually relieved that I was GBS+ in the end.  My water broke (or so I thought), but for some reason I was testing negative for amniotic fluid when I went to L&D. I was only at 2cm, but in a lot of pain and if I wasn't GBS+, I would have been sent home.  But I was admitted and had my son just 10 hours later.

  • i was gbs pos too. i was induced though so i already had to be hooked up to an iv. however it was on wheels and had i not also had PIH and need to have my BP taken every 15 min i would have been able to walk around

  • You can walk around, no worries. They typically like to get two doses in you and at least one before you deliever, which takes about 4 hours. So if you think you are in labor, go to the hospital.

The only time you aren't able to walk around is when you have an epi and/or they need to do fetal monitoring. Plus with the epi, you are pretty much numb from the waist down.
