TTC After a Loss

Flying and early PG

I'm not PG yet, but we are starting IUIs next month.  My concern is - in late May, I have a family obligation out of the country (a 10 hour plane ride each way).  If I am pregnant by then (or in the 2ww but actually pg and just don't know it), would either the flight and/or going through the x-ray thing threaten either the pregnancy or the baby?

My other concern is - we're going to a very Catholic country; their laws are ruled so much by Catholic dogma that (to my knowledge) birth control, fertility treatments, etc, are banned entirely from the country.  I know that in the US, Catholic hospitals won't do anything to help a pregnant woman who's mc-ing or whose pg is threatened - can I expect the same (mis)treatment in Ireland if God forbid, anything were to happen there?

WDYT - should we plan to postpone treatment till June, or will the hypothetical baby and I be fine?

TIA. :)

Re: Flying and early PG

  • The flight and x-ray are non-concerns. You yourself are not going through an x-ray machine, just your stuff, and your exposure would me minimal. Even if you did, it'd likely not do any harm- repeated exposure is much more of an issue.

As far as your other concern about care if you were to m/c in Ireland- I really don't know. I would imagine that if those are the laws that govern how their hospitals are run, then that would be the case. I'd do a little more research into the actual laws though, before worrying about Catholic dogma. I did research on their stance when I had my ectopic, b/c I was interested- treatment, if it is going to threaten the life of the mother (as in an ectopic) and where the baby has no chance of survival (which is the case with an ectopic- there is no way the baby can thrive in a tube), is permissible. That is the most "life threatening" issue you will come across with m/c anyways, so you'd be covered to get appropriate medical treament in that instance. You probably wouldn't know it if you had a missed m/c, and if you start to m/c naturally, there's really not a whole lot any dr can do at that point, aside from doing a D&C to make sure everything is out.

  • A 10 hour flight and the security screening is perfectly safe for pregnant woment in early pregnancy.   The cut-off for flying is between 32 and 36 weeks depending on the airline.

I work for an airline.  If flying had any effect on pregnancy, there would not be so many pregnant flight attentants!     A 12-14 hour day is the norm for them.

I don't believe you would have any trouble receiving treatment in Ireland.   https://www.irishhealth.com/article.html?id=669

Actually, fertility treatments are not banned in Ireland.  They are not covered by their public health system, but they are available in private clinics.   A similar situation exists in Canada - IVF is not covered by our free public health care system but you can go to private clinics.

Personally, I would go.  It sounds like a wonderful trip with your family.

  • Just to clarify - I don't care what Catholic dogma says per se (obviously, since I'm using fertility treatments); but that dogma if I'm not mistaken is what drives Irish laws regarding that stuff.

Do you think if I called the Irish Consulate here they'd tell me the truth, or is my better bet to call the American Embassy in Dublin?
