s/o of car seat placement - two carseats?

So we have always had my son's carseat in the middle.  Now that #2 is on his way, where do we put them? Baby in the middle? Where does my older son go then?

Re: s/o of car seat placement - two carseats?

  • I can't fit a seat on one side and a seat in the middle so we'll be doing a seat on each side

  • We're doing one on each side instead of the middle. DD behind driver and new baby boy behind passenger.
  • good question. probably one behind each seat.  i don't think you'll be able to fit one in the middle and one on the side, but you can sure try.
  • I don't think you can have one in the middle and one on the side.  We'll have DD behind the passenger where she currently is, and we're adding the infant seat behind the driver.  Our cars won't allow us to have the covertible in the middle....it's not as stable.

  • I just posted the same question in the carseat post that already exists. Glad I'm not the only one wondering. =]
  • i think they have to go on either side with nothing in the middle

  • It should be in your manual or take it to a certified inspector. Your hospital can refer you to the inspectors in your area.

I think it depends on the airbags! Definately worth having it inspected.

  • I think we are putting DS behind the driver seat and the baby behind the passenger seat. I do not know if you can put a infant seat in the middle and have another car seat on the other side of it.

  • I'm not sure whether I want to move DD behind the driver and baby behind the passenger so I can reach her better.

Curious as to what everyone's answers are.

  • I'm (kind of) in the same situation with twins on the way.  We have no middle seat so we just put them behind the driver's and passenger's seats.  We got a certified carseat inspector to look at them who said they looked just fine placed that way.

  • DS was always in the middle but now that DD is here he is behind the driver seat and DD is behind the passenger seat. I would have prefered DD in the middle and DS behind the passanger seat but they wouldnt fit. 85% of all side impacted car accidents occur on the drivers side so putting the older child on the driver side is the smarter decision god forbid something happen.
  • We'll put DD#1 behind the passenger seat and DD#2 behind the driver seat. Both can use the latch system, but 2 carseats cannot be on the same latch unless specifically stated in the manual.
  • Oh, DH and I just talked about this the other day.

DS will be going behind the passenger side of the car since when I drive I can glance over my shoulder and talk to him or just see if he needs something easier.

The new baby, DD, will go in the middle.  That way DS can give her stuff if needed.

For those of you who don't have a middle seat, I agree with PP and go to the fire department (car safety person in area) and ask them where  the best position in your car should be.

  • My daughter's carseat is gigantic, and we have a little 2-door Honda, so we have no choice but to put her carseat on one side, and the baby seat on the other.
  • wow! I'm so glad I asked.  Yeah, even with an SUV you are all probably right about not being able to put one in the middle any more.  I didn't even think about how you have to "share" a latch in doing so anyway.  I guess that answers my question.  Thanks ladies!

DD behind me and baby behind passenger.  With a rear-facing infant seat, we can't put the seat back as much as DH likes when driving so that's why the baby goes behind the passenger side.  I wouldn't want to put them side by side because I have a feeling that DD would eventually start bothering him.
