nursing clothes

Does anyone use nursing tops, etc.? Are they useful for nursing in public? I'm trying to figure out if it is worth investing in some tops so that I can nurse discreetly if I have company or am out in public. I'm a little large breasted so I feel very self conscious about how much might show and I admit that I am on the more shy side... Right now, I'm just using baggy t-shirts, etc. and have not attempted to nursing in public.

If you wear nursing clothes, do you recommend any particular places to look or any brands to look at?

Thanks in advance!

Re: nursing clothes

  • I think most people just wearing nursing tanks under a regular shirt - that way you can pull up your top shirt (which will cover the top part of you breast) and pop open the tank.

I'm a small girl though so I don't know what tanks to recommend that would be supportive - I know there are some out there though.  I have a Bravado one that I don't like because it feel super restrictive so that might be a supportive brand.  Most nursing clothes I've seen are pricey and not so stylish.

  • My opinion is that nursing clothes are a waste of money.  Putting a nursing tank underneath a regular shirt is a good way to nurse in public and in front of guests.  Another good way is to wear a cardigan over a regular shirt, that way when you lift up your shirt your back is covered and you can button/zip up the cardigan over your stomach.  Or just invest in one cheap nursing cover!

One more thing I did was wear a cami under a button-down shirt, so I unbuttoned a little and then lifted the cami up over my chest.

  • I made one of these Hooter Hider-type covers for myself and a friend made two more.  They are awesome for feeding in front of others or out in public.  They are much less expensive to make than to buy.

  • I have a few tops from Motherhood. I wouldn't recommend them if you're large chested. Mine are C-D cups and even the XL size are small in the chest area. The few that fit well are nice though. I love not having to hike my shirt up because several times I ended up with deodorant marks all over my shirt from stuffing it in my armpit to hold it up. On a good day the worst you get is a few shirt wrinkles. I have had good success with a hooter hider, but you still need to wear a looser shirt or your whole back/side could be exposed. To me it was the back/side showing that led me to nursing tops, the front can easily be covered with a blanket or hooter hider. Nursing camis under a regular shirt are a good idea too if you can find one that you like.
  • Nursing tanks save the day!

You can get them for a fairly moderate price at Target.
