Most hated childhood parent-sayings?

What's one (or more!) sayings that you hated hearing growing up? (besides "no" LOL)

Mine:

"Children should be seen, not heard" Angry

Re: Most hated childhood parent-sayings?

  • Whenever my mom was saying no to something or asking me to STOP, she ended with "period full-stop." Umm... thanks for the punctuation lesson, Mom. Drove me nuts.
  • Loading the player...
  • "Because I said so" (which I'll more than likely use myself)!
  • Life's not fair-Ugh I hated when my mom said that.

  • "I brought you in to this world...ill take you out!"  (kidding of course...but it was SO annoying!)

  • "Dry it up!"-That's what my Dad always said when I was crying after being fussed at.  I HATED it and it always made me cry harder, but it turned into that weird silent cry.  I don't know why he thought that worked.
  • "Stop crying before I really give you something to cry about."

    Love,

    Dad

  • do as I say not as I do

    because I said so

These are from my crazy abusive aunt her children were always getting into trouble:

Don't make me slap you into next week

I birthed you into this world and I will take you out (LMAO)

You don't have a pot to piss in or one to throw it out of. This is my house!

Stop crying before I give you something to really cry about

  • "Irrelevant."  Anytime I'd object to his rulings, my dad would let me know that my feelings/input had no bearing on the matter at hand.

There were several times I was tempted to say "You keep using this word.  I do not think it means what you think it means."

  • "I know you better than you know yourself" from my Mom. I used to HATE it when she said that.
  • Oh, I hated it at the time, but now I'm glad she was this way. Anytime I'd compare my "un-cool" mom to my friends' cool moms, she would say, "I'm not your friend, I'm your mom." Their moms would party with them and let them drink in the house, etc. and would act more like their friend than their mom. At the time, I hated it, but now I appreciate that she was my mom first and my friend second. I will raise DD the same way.
  • "Das ist ausgeschlossen!" ?(That is out of the question!)

    "Mach Schnell!" ? (Hurry up!)?

"This too shall pass." ?I can appreciate this now, but when I was 13, it was of no solace. ?I really, really did think my world was falling apart.n ??

  • Me:  That's not fair!

     Mom:  Fairs are for tourists.

  • Ooh- I almost thought I didn't have any. But "Because I said so" reminded me... Yeah, never liked that one.

Although, when my grandma told me (as like a grade-schooler) that "It'll get better before you get married", it always DID make me feel better... I still say that now, to DH, even though it's not literally applicable. It just helps put things into perspective.

  • My dad "This hurts me more than it hurts you."

And yes, he would tell me this before he spanked me.

He also made me go to my room and wait a few minutes to ponder my wrongdoing before he would actually come in for the spanking.

Thankfully I was a good kid and can only remember 1 occasion where he spanked me. I was 7 and playing on the roof of our house with a friend (our patio connected to the roof).

  • Someday your children will do the same thing...see how you feel about it then.

Still waiting mom, but I'm sure I have some payback headed my way...especailly with 2 girls who will become teenagers one day!
