How do you deal with your bad car rider?

DD is about to wake from a nap and then we are headed out to a lot of traffic to bring my friend to a dr.'s appt. I hate the idea, but, ya know.

She gets bored after about 10 mins of riding and then proceeds to cry for a while. When this happens, I want to scream (NOT at her), hurt someone (not really but you know what I mean), cry, etc. My daughter can cry during sleep training, but I LOATHE if she cries any other time. What to do?

Singing helps some...but not much else. If we stop, she is just gonna cry again.

Re: How do you deal with your bad car rider?

  • Sometimes, but not always, turning the radio to AM static (white noise) will shut her up.

But DD is such a little rascal in the car.  She HATES to be where she can't see people.  It's a little better now since she'll look over at DS and babble to him... but in general, she prefers to scream.

  • Loading the player...
  • my DD hates cars too. the only thing that has helped is moving her to a convertible seat where she can see more.  in her infant seat, we had it in the middle of the backseat, and it had one of those canopies.  id scrunch it up to the middle so i could look in on her while stopped.  she liked to play like that, or just give her as many toys as would fit in the car seat.
  • I will put on a disney cd, roll down the window a little, strap lots of hanging toys to the straps so she can't drop them.?

And don't laugh at me, when she was in her meltdown every time she got int he car stage, I put the fp rainforest crib soother around the headrest of the back seat. I kept a stick or something with me in the front seat to push the button to turn it on.

Now I just take her most fave toys & strap them onto her straps so she can't drop them. That will usually do it. We also sing the alphabet song or twinkle twinkle. ?

  • Why don't you turn your kid around to forward facing Stick out tongue

    (I'm just kidding!)

  • Roll the windows down (and blast the heat if it's cold out), clip new toys to the car seat, sing songs, play songs on the radio.

Of course, try to leave when baby is full, freshly diapered, and has had lots of play and even mommy time before you go so you can be reasonably sure that's not why she's wailing back there.

Other than that, at least for us at 9.5mos, I let her be mad. And that's all the cry is anymore. She's frustrated for having to sit still and, really, there's not too much I can do about that.

  • You confuse me. Most people who flip about their kiddo crying in the car don't let them CIO at night.

Anyhow, my dd hated car rides, so i gave her toys, played music, and made minimal trips.
