blankets at bed time

when did you guys let your kids sleep with a blanket?

i still dont - i never did due to SIDS - and always kept her in a warm pj. since she's already 10.5 months now im wondering if this is a good time to start?

mady tosses and turns in her sleep so im always scared of the suffocation possibilities.

Re: blankets at bed time

  • we don't give her a blanket either. the pedi said as long as a child is in a crib, you should not give a blanket. so not til she's in a toddler bed. i hate it because i feel so bad that she's in there all alone with no blanket, but she's in warm jammies, and she doens't know any different anyway!

  • I have always used a blanket in some way shape or form. I started out by using a receiving blanket to swaddle him which they showed us in the hospital (doesn't everyone do this?). Then when he did not want to be swaddled, I wrapped the receiving blanket around him by tucking it underneath him tightly.

When I moved to the crib at about a month and a half, I used a thicker receiving blanket (like one of the more expensive Carters ones) and tucked it under him. He kicks it off a lot. My little guy is a sweater and gets too hot at night if I put him in pajamas that are too warm and wakes up crying and hot and sweaty. He doesn't move much in his sleep so I am comfortable with putting the blanket in with him. He is much more comfortable that way and then I'm not overheating him and he sleeps better. I know a lot of people would think I am horrible for putting the blanket in... but my mom did it with me and I turned out just fine.

  • Nadia's got pj's and a fleece sleep sack... not sure how that's going tto work when she starts standing in there though.

  • Like Karen we've always used a blanket. Mikey gets a slightly thicker blanket now he usually kicks it off since he rolls all over the place. He has used a blanket at daycare ever since he was able to sleep on his belly.

i also swaddled - we stopped the swaddling at about 3 months because she figured out at that point how to unwrap herself. but our swaddles had velcro where the ends would attach...does that make sense? lol

  • I've always given Alexis a blanket, when she was really little I used the breathable knit receiving blankets.  When she got older, I started using a heavier blanket.  At first I would tuck the bottom of the blanket in the bottom of the crib and make sure that her arms were always out.  I watched her a lot and it was never an issue.  She would end up on top of it sometimes, but never never did it go even close to her head.  She now sleeps with 2 blankets at night and has for months.  I feel totally comfortable with it.  She tosses and turns a lot too but it still never becomes a suffocation issue - she even likes to lie her head on the blanket b/c it's soft.

  • Really? Yikes! Jonathan was a swaddle lover so he was always wrapped up in one until 4 months, he now uses a small very thin blanket (like the size of two washcloths) to rub against his cheek and face to fall asleep once he knocks out I remove that blanket and i cover his body with a regular blanket which he likes to hold with his hands, not the comfortable the bedding set came with but a reg. carters blanket. Our house is very cold like 70 degrees and when the temp drops outside it can get down to about 68 so he has to be very warm in there :)
  • I let them have blankets once they are out of the crib. Kaitlyn was never much of a tosser, so I guess she could have had one earlier, but Hannah is wild in general (including sleep) so I'm afraid she would somehow wrap it around her head while sleeping. She wears warm PJ's though, so I;m sure she's fine. I feel bad though because we're all snug in our comforters and pooh Hannah just has some long sleeved PJ's on!

  • I swaddled Maia until she was about 4 months. Then she used a sleeper blanket, the type you zip up. Now she uses a blanket that my cousin knit for her. She's been using it since she was maybe 11 months old. It's actually crochet so it's thick yarn but there's tons of "holes" in it so that keeps me from worrying too much.

  • opps...we have always used a blanket. Madison gets wrapped in the recieving blanket and I usually use a Koala Blanket to wrap over her (up to the chest area) and wrap it around the sleep positioner.

Most nights she kicks her way out of the sleep positioner and up away from the blankets but we keep the house cold so I use both of these.

  • I have pretty much always let Riley sleep with a blanket. She was swaddled for the first few months but was constantly kicking her way out of it so we gave up and just tucked a blanket around her. Now she sleeps with several blankets. She loves to have one to hold and to cuddle up to and she also has one covering her through the night. Once a few hours have gone by the blankets are all at the ends and sides of the crib so I really don't worry about Sids that much. Plus, they are pretty light weight so I believe she could easily breathe through them if need be.

  • I've always been petrified of a blanket.  We use a knitted blanket which has lots of holes, makes me feel better and we dress him warmly. He usually kicks the blanket off anyway.

  • Diego is still in his crib and uses no blanket. He wears the two piece PJ's long sleeves and pants with socks. He never liked to be swaddle so I never got comfortable with blankets in his crib.....actually until two weeks ago he slept alone now he likes to bring a green frog that sings and stuff.
  • We've always given Chelsea a blanket to sleep with.  First for swaddling and now a light receiving blanket.  She actually covers her face with the blanket.  I think she likes the softness.  I am petrified of this but she won't sleep without it - it comforts her. So - what we've done b/c its so light and thin - we tie a knot in the middle so only a small piece touches/covers her face and I turn the monitor up full blast.  Cold nights (like Monday night) I use a thicker blanket and tuck it under her bottom.  Of course she kicks her way out of it.

  • After the swaddling time was done, we used no blankets for Cedric until he was in a regular bed.  I used the sleep sacks for about a month after stopping the swaddling, but that was it.  Then just pj's.

  • Mikey has always slept with a blanket. When he was smaller I would tuck it under his sleep positioner, but now that he is older I place it over him and make sure both arms are uncovered. He also has a toy blankie that he hugs while he sleeps.
