Those with dogs that shed

DH and I have a 2 year old black lab that is in the house.  He sheds horribly and with a new baby, new carpet, and new furniture I NEED to get the dog hair under control.  If I don't then my dog will have to either go to another home or to a shelter, which I will do anything to avoid.  Does anybody have any tricks, tips, or suggestions as far as controlling pet hair in their home?

Re: Those with dogs that shed

  • We have a black lab and a chocolate lab my only trick is that I vacuum the rugs everyday, sometimes two times a day and I dry swiffer the wood floors about every other day. I also use those sticky roller things on the pillows or chairs. Normally it's only reallllllly bad in the spring.

Hope that helps a little! (You're kidding about giving them away because they shed right???)?

  • We have a boxer and a boxer lab mix....we have them on Nutro and always have...controls SOME..not enough in my eyes....I brush them often and our like to get on the furniture...so we put foil on the couch and they wont get on when you are not around to tell them not to...the shedding drives me crazy but ..i just vacuum and sweep A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!
  • We use a brush called the "Furminator" on our chocolate lab. seems to do the trick!
  • I really hope you're kidding about giving the dog away due to shedding. I have a black lab and 2 long haired cats that shed and pet hair is a way of life for us. We vacuum the carpets and upholstery often. If my DS comes in contact with some pet hair, it's really no biggie.
  • Dyson  is a God send with 2 inside greatdanes.  Also, my sister's lab takes a steroid shot once a month that prevents shedding due to allergies.  The dog doesnt have skin problems and she didnt even know it was a problem until she mentioned the shedding problem to her vet.  Her vet said most labs have this problem and it can be fixed with the shot.  It has made a world of difference for her.  Also, we feed lamb and rice or salmon formulated dog foods and it keeps skin health better to reduce shedding!
  • We have a lab and 2 ankle biters. The Furminator rocks, if you use it regularly.
  • so you want to get rid of your dogs because they shed??? Hmm wow
  • no tricks here except what the pps already said.  Friends of ours said the furminator treatments at the groomer works pretty well (they have 2 newfoundlands who have CRAZY fur).  We haven't tried that bc it's pretty pricey on top of already $50 groom, but I think we're going to when DD starts crawling.
  • We could swiffer every day and still have tumbleweeds of hair in certain places. I try to brush our dog every couple of days to cut down on what falls in the house. Since DS was born, the poor dog has been getting bathed less, but we try to do it every couple of weeks to get all that dead hair out of his coat that would fall off in the house. We also bring his dog bed into the family room so he lays on that instead of the rug where DS plays. We swiffer and vacuum a lot.

ETA: And I do hope you're kidding about giving them away or to a shelter simply because they shed.

  • my hair sheds all over the place.. mabye my dh should get rid of me
  • Are you freaking kidding me?? You would get rid of the dog b/c of its dog hair!!! You cannot pretend that you didn't know your LAB would shed when you bought it; this is not a new development.

I can sometimes sympathize when people have a behavior issue with their animal, but dog hair?? That's insane...prepare yourself for major flaming.

  • That is absolutely sick that you would put your dog in a shelter b/c he/she sheds. You are a disgusting human being and I hope your dog bites you on the ass Angry

  • Labs shed.  I try to vacuum often.  I've heard great things about the furminator brush but haven't gotten it yet.  I think you can find it for pretty cheap on amazon.  I would NEVER get rid of my lab because of her shedding.  It's not going to harm DS.

Completely agree.  And also, a pet is a lifetime commitment, not a disposable piece of trash.  Posts like yours make me sick.

  • Make your DH brush the dogs every other day outside with the Furminator brush. Give the labs regular baths out side too to wash off excess hair maybe. Vacuum/Swiffer every day.

Our house is entirely tile and it is so annoying with all the dog hair. With carpet, it kind of hides it/holds it down at least. But with tile you can see even the littlest bit, not to mention feel it on your feet. Arrgh!

It's ironic - we have a greyhound and a chow. Yes the chow has a ton of hair, but it sticks TO her and I have to brush it off her. Our greyhound is the one who sheds everywhere. Ugh.

Yeah, that is odd.  I would think that chows would shed more than a greyhound......

wow, that's really sad that you'd give your dog up due to shedding. I have a golden retreiver that sheds EVERYWHERE all the time but I'd NEVER give him away because of it! He's a major part of our family!
  • 1. high quality dog food

    2. fish oil pill every evening (I buy them at Costco)

    3. Dyson and vacuum daily or every other.

    4. Furminator

And I also hope you're kidding about getting rid of your dog. Labs shed- you knew that going into it. They benefits of your child growing up wth a dog far outweigh the shedding IMO. ?Get over it and vacuum?regularly. Trust me, I feel your pain. I have a yellow lab and wood floors... *sigh* I love my dog with everything I have... and the shedding is just part of it.?

  • We have a husky, yellow lab, and a great dane and although I hate the dog hair in my house, I love my boys and wouldn't change that for anything in this world.

I can only give the same advice that everyone else has. We have a Dyson and I vacuum just about everyday and I try and brush them 3 times a week outside in the backyard. This helps keep some of the fur from falling all over my house.

  • We use the furminator regularly....it definitely helps. I also run the roomba daily when I leave the house. We have two puggles and there is always hair, but these things helps an aweful lot :)
