Birth Stories

i found my birth story. induction turned c-section

I went in for induction at 7 am Friday the 12th and started pitocin around 8 am. It was pretty boring for awhile, but I was able to doze & watch tv while H did sudoku & crossoword puzzles. :) The contrax picked up slowly & I got 2 doses of nubain around 2ish to numb the pain. [Sometime in here I got an internal fetal monitor because Shepherd was moving around too much.] It worked for awhile. Around 3:30-4, I asked for more nubain, but it didn't really
work that time, so I got the epi around 5-5:30. After the epi, I progressed pretty quickly. I guess I needed to relax. At 4 cm the dr. broke my water. Soon after that they checked again & I was only 5. H went home to get something to eat.  Around 8:30, I called the nurse in to ask for more ice, but before she could do that she flipped me from my left to right side in a split second without saying anything. Apparently neither of us were tolerating the pitocin very well, and my BP was pretty low (80s/50s) due to the epi and baby's HR was low. I had an oxygen mask for the rest of labor but was able to avoid the epinephrine shot because my normal BP is high 90s/low 100s anyway.

At that point i was checked again and had progressed from 5cm-10cm in only 2 hours! we started to try pushing & perineal massage,  but he was still too high so we tried "laboring down" in different positions for an hour, pushing again, and doing the whole routine off & and on until about 1:30ish am. Before transfering to the delivery room, they found out he had moved sideways during descent and his ear was where the top of his head was supposed to be. when the dr. told me i was looking at a c/s, i was pretty upset but he said, "don't worry i don't give up until you give up." so we tried laboring down on my back & side until i couldn't suppress the urge to push any longer. after pushing & trying to turn him with suction, his heartrate was dropping from 150s to 80s with every push.

I yelled at the dr., if there was something wrong,  to "just cut him out!" and he told me that's what they were going to have to do. he assured me it wasn't emergent and that he was stuck sideways behind my too-small pelvic bone.

as i was being wheeled into OR, i broke down about forgetting my camera in the labor room, couldn't remember if i even brought it to the hospital, and started bawling about how i was going to be a bad mom. i'm sure the (very cute) male nurse was amused. but he very sweet about the whole thing. i talked them out of strapping my arms down, and brandon found the camera. when they took him out, he didn't cry right away, so
i yelled, "why isn't he crying?" over & over but was assured that he was moving. i heard someone say, "we have a pulse?" and then he wailed. the next day brandon told me he turned blue because he swallowed some fluid. very common, i guess.

the absolute worst parts: fundal massage with not enough morphine. "skidmark" tears from pushing PLUS the incision! not getting to see or hold my baby until 2 1/2 hours after he was born.  (finding out i pooped during pushing 3 months later!)

the absolute best parts: the beautiful baby boy :) my OB had a dr. pepper waiting for me in recovery after i had said something about it on the way into OR.
