Cost of childcare in Canada

I'm not pregnant now but am trying to do some budgeting to get a sense of how much childcare will cost when we have a little one.

DH and I live in Toronto - no chance we'll be moving, and I'll probably stay home for the 1st year.

If you're comfortable with sharing what part of Canada you're from, how old your children are and how much you spend on childcare a month, that would be greatly appreciated!

  • I have seen it range from 40-60/day here in KW.
  • It will depend what type of care you are looking for.  DS will be going to a home day care and the cost is $35/day.  This is in KW.  Day care centre's are more money.  I did find some home day care's for less money, anywhere from $25-$30, but they were not places I would want my child to be at!
  • We're in the Okanagan, BC and on average childcare is $600-800 per child per month.  We also have a 1.5 year waiting list which I didn't know about, thankfully I have a friend who is going to watch DS when I go back to work in a few months.

  • I'm in small town Alberta and we pay $700/month.  We have a long waiting list for our center too.  I put DD#2 on the list just after I found out I was pregnant.
  • In Calgary I pay $990/month for my <19 months.
