2nd Trimester

Your thoughts on this car seat

I haven't done much research on baby gear yet, but I just got a message from my step-MIL asking us if we like this car seat. She thought it fit us because we tend to travel a lot - we don't actually travel that much, but enough where I'm already wondering how we'll do it with all the baby gear. Our first trip with baby (if everyone is well) is planned for 8 weeks after the birth. Anyway, it looks interesting and I wanted to get thoughts from those of you who may have already done some research on car seats. Here's a link and description.

The All-in-One Car Seat, Baby Stroller and Booster Seat.
A boon for parents traveling with young children, this versatile seat converts quickly and easily from a secure car/plane seat (forward- or rear-facing) into a sturdy, maneuverable stroller, complete with adjustable-height handle and a low center of gravity for stability. It can even be used as a booster seat when dining. The wheels and handle fold up and fit inside the body, and it secures to seats directly with a seat belt, for a true all-in-one solution. Instead of lugging excessive amounts of gear with you when you travel or shop, this innovative system allows you to simply wheel your child to the plane or car, fold away the stroller's wheels and handle, and buckle it firmly in place. Upon arrival, simply unbuckle the seat and transform it back into a stroller. Featuring the safest possible 5-point harness system, the seat is fully compliant with all safety standards, and can be adjusted to accommodate children from 5 to 40 pounds. The seat has a convenient storage bin in back, and its cover is removable and easy to clean. The manufacturer has confirmed that this item meets U.S. Federal toy safety standards for lead.

Re: Your thoughts on this car seat

  • Personally, and maybe this is naive, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with a seat made by a company other than one in the baby industry. It sounds like a good idea, in theory, but for that kind of money you could get highly-rated convertible seats made by a reputable baby company.

Also, am I making this up, or isn't HS going out of business? I thought I heard it mentioned along with Sharper Image in recent economic news.

  • I can't find safety reviews on that seat in Baby Bargains so that alone would make me look elsewhere. Plus I'd rather start out with an infant seat- the convertible seats aren't good for infants.

I'd personally prefer to start out with an infant seat, even though it's extra cost, it would be a huge pain to not have one when the baby is little, plus they are the safest.

I think that's a great idea for travelling/flying, but I wouldn't want that as my main car seat/stroller.

  • I saw someone at the airport with one of these and it looked very handy.  The child was probably 9 months old.  I agree that it doesn't look very comfy for infants, but I think there are infant inserts you can buy that could be placed in it.

However, I also think that this is something that you would just want to use while you were traveling by air.  I think you would find that on normal outings you would miss the storage and convenience features (basket, cupholders, handle adjustability) of a standard stroller, and baby would be miss out on some comfort.
