Baby Einstein DVDs - to start or not to start?

My DS has never watched a Baby Einstein DVD.  Are they worth it?  Should I get him started?  Should I try to hold off from him watching TV as long as possible?

(Note: We do turn the TV on for us when he's playing, we just don't turn on shows for him.)

Re: Baby Einstein DVDs - to start or not to start?

  • My DD has never cared for them. She does however LOVE Babyfirst TV which is way more interactive than BE videos.

  • It's a judgment call.  The AAP recommends no tv before 2 years.  Personally, I need the break every once in a while and I think tv is fine in moderation.  We have a couple of Baby Einstein DVDs and she likes them a lot.  I wouldn't say that the DVDs are a must-have or anything, but they do elicit a lot of language from her.

Some of them are better than others, though, so if you're getting them, try a few from the library or netflix before you buy any.

  • My experience with baby einstein has been nothing but good. My dd loves the dvd's especially the puppets on them. She also loves when they sing songs and even tries to sing with them. She has learn a lot from watching them. I bought all of the baby einstein dvds in a lot off of ebay. I try to teach and reinforce whichever dvd she watches. So if she watched the baby first signs dvd...I would also watch and learn the signs and use them daily. She now does most of the signs(about 20 of them). Right now we are concentrating on learning shapes. So she will watch the shape dvd- then we will color and I will draw the shapes too. Between the dvds and myself she catches on quickly.

It seems like the better dvds are geared towards 6-9-12 months. The 3 month ones aren't as great as they are mostly classical music and no words.

  • DS loves Baby E and when he is in a frumpy grumpy mood they are a life saver. Our favorite is Baby Divinci (sp) Head to Toes and Neighborhood Animals.

  • Your son is going to learn a lot more about the world by playing in it than by watching Baby Einstein - whether or not babies/toddlers should be watching tv, there have been research studies that show when babies/toddlers watch something happen on tv, they don't understand it as much as if they see the same thing happen in real life. And if he's made it this long without it, then why start now?

The book "Parenting, Inc." has some pretty good parts about the whole babies-and-tv thing in it.

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • I've never tried Baby Einstein, but DS LOVES Classical Baby.
