Pregnant after a Loss

Stopping in to share birth story

Hey ladies, we had a really rough first night home with Abby and I am wiped but I figured I would try and post my birth story for those interested.  As a lot of you know I was on bedrest for high bp and on Wednesday I was in the hospital for it but was released.  Well my doctor was not pleased with Thursday's bp either and decided she wanted me to go straight to l&d for induction.  Well we got there and the nurse got a good bp reading (a little too good and it made me a little curious of whether it was accurate).  Well, i sat there for four hours (they never retested it) and the dr on call came and said I would be admitted overnight for observation and they would make a decision the next afternoon. H and I were very annoyed since my dr had been adamant that I be induced and because they never retook the bp.  Well we were up in maternity and after an hour my bp was taken again and was high again.  Nothing was done at that point and they left me there for four hours.  At that point H looked at me and i just didn't look well. He got upset and went and found a supervisor and demanded someone come check on me.  Thank god he did because my bp was extremely high.  The MFM came in and saw me and said he wanted to start softening up my cervix in order to prepare for induction (they wanted me 2-3 cm dilated before starting pitocin).  I went on a 12 hour softener at 10 pm and 10 am next day - no progress.  Then they did a 4 hour treatment and again after 4 hours - nothing! I was getting really upset a this point.  Well they did another 4 hour (at this point my mom had come and gone- she was going to be present for the delivery but at this point it looked like nothing was happening for a while - in fact they felt I would not have the baby early than Saturday)  Well they started the 4 hr at 3pm.  At 4 they let me go and walk the halls for some time.  I was having regular contrax at this time but they were pretty tolerable (just felt like a ton of pressure).  I got back at about 5 to the room. H left to go outside for a moment at that time and while he was gone I got a contrax that caused me to fall to my knees it was so strong.  Before I could even catch my breath I got another (at this point H got back).  He ran to find the nurse who went and found a doctor.  They got me on pain meds at that point (probably got them around 6).  They checked me at that point and I was 1 cm and 75% dilated (I got to the hospital at 1 cm/50%).  I went another hour - hour and half in the worst pain. The doctor came back to check and immediately told me I needed to get the epi because clearly I was in severe pain.  I got my epi about 7:30 pm. (at this point my mom and dad had both gotten back to the hospital).  They checked me about half hour after (I should also mention the epi was doing nothing at this point) I was now 4 cm and 90%.  The doctor said it would be several hours (about 1 cm per hour they said was the normal).  Well my water broke at about 8:30.  Shortly thereafter I started telling the nurses that I needed to push and they kept saying that it was too early.  They finally grabbed the ob who check and much to everyone's surprise I was fully dilated!  The doctor was getting ready for a c sect and figured I would start pushing and she would be back in time for the delivery (BOY WAS SHE WRONG!)   Here is where it got scarey - I started pushing and Abby really could not tolerate the pushing.  They started having problems with her heartrate and had to keep pulling me on my side - eventually I started pushing on my side.  At some point the nurse told me Abby was in distress and that it was too late for a csect because she was too far into the birth canal.  I began having a panic attack for fear of my little girl (my mom was also crying at this point and H was scared but wasn't letting on).  They also kicked all non necessary people out of the room (it is a teaching hospital so there had been students in there) and they started bringing in additional doctors.  They let me push through one more contrax or they were goign to get her out with forceps, at which I literally gave it all I could.  Abby came flying out hand first like superman :).  I only had pushed for about 45 minutes so all of this had happened really fast.  She is a real peanut (5 lbs 15 1/2 oz and 18 in long).  My mom cut the cord (H passed when they asked him) and she was also the one who told H and it was a girl.  H and I both just cried when we heard.  I had some tearing so I was on the table being stitched up for a while.  My dad was finally allowed in and was hugging the nurses (until abby I was the last girl born in the family).  After my parents left Abby was given  back to me and nursed like a champ.  I chose to let her sleep in the nursery that night and let them give her a bottle.  After that, I had her sleep in the nursery every night but she was brought back through out the night to nurse.  I totally recommend doing it this way as it gave me much needed rest which I now see how important it was as Abby had an awful first night home.  The pain has been tough and I am now having a visiting nurse at the house everyday as my blood pressure is still not back to normal.  Abby has had a lot of trouble nursing since my milk came in and has caused me a lot of stress.  Breast feeding is definitely harder than I expected but I am trying to stick to it.  As I had some latching issues, my doctor gave a prescription for a breast pump which got here today.  If you are interest, I got the Ameda Purely Yours backpack which I was told by the hospital is actually the only FDA approved pump.  Sorry this is so long but hopefully it is helpful.

  • Wow!  What an amazing story.  I can't believe how fast you dilated at the end.  It's a good then you got the epi when you did.  How scary to have Abby in distress and in the birth canal.  I'm so glad everything turned out fine.
