Opinion on girl name

DH and I are pretty much set on the name Vivian if we have a girl. I like to play around with other names for fun, but this is the one we both always end up coming back to. Originally, we had discussed Charlotte as a mn, but I've always toyed with the idea of naming a little girl after my dear, late grandmother. Her name was Mildred, which I don't like, but I do love the name Millie and think it can stand alone vs. being seen as just a nickname. On top of that, my due date (Nov. 8th) is my Nana's birthday, so that adds a little extra sentiment to naming a girl after her. I threw Vivian Millie together just to see how it flowed and, surprisingly, I really liked it. I thought it looked cute and vintage. But I still love Vivian Charlotte as well. So, I'd love some others' opinions too:

Vivian Charlotte

or

Vivian Millie

Our last name is Alexander, so both names sound fine with it. Thanks!

  • agreed.... what a great honor for your Nana!
  • Vivian Millie-

When we have a baby and if it is a girl we are naming her after my Nana as well. (by the way... I love that you call her Nana too!) Mickey Joy after grandma. Mickey is her name and Joy because she brought so much joy to my life.

So go with the sentiment of Millie! You'll never regret it!

  • I'm due on my Grandma's birthday too... she passed away last summer... so it's my vote to use her name in some form!
  • My last name is Alexander, too, and you and I have similar naming tastes - I had both Charlotte (who ended up being a Charlie) and Vivian on my list of girl names.

What about going with Vivian Amelia with nn Millie? I like Vivian Charlotte, but I'm all for you honoring Nana!

  • Vivian Charlotte flows better.
  • I normally don't like using nicknames as given names, but the sentiment here is so sweet that I actually kind of love Vivian Millie (the fact that Millie is the middle name helps).  Vivian Charlotte has a better "ring" to me, but I think Millie would be a lovely way to honor your Nana.

Ha! That's great. Yes, I do tend to gravitate towards the vintage names. Smile

I do love the name Amelia, but the only problem I have with it is that it loses the meaning of Mildred/Millie, which means "gentle strength." Yes, I'm one who does look at name meanings and I just adore that one. So, that's the main reason I wanted to go with "Millie," vs. Amelia, Camille, Millicent, etc.

I completely agree and I only came around on the name "Millie" as a stand-alone after extensive research on baby name sites, lol. The fact that Nameberry endorses it as a stand-alone was a big plus (love that site!). I'm not a nn person in general, so I completely understand where you're coming from. And you're right - the fact that it would be the mn helps a lot. I don't think I could go with Millie as a first name.

Ah, gotcha. I'm a total name-nerd and all about meanings. Keep it true to honor your Nana. Vivian Millie it is! :-)

  • What about using a name with a similar meaning?  Audrey is "noble strength", Phila or Philomena, etc...

I love the name Vivian (it was my first choice and it got nixed as I've been whining about around here for the past few days).  My DH's gma was Mildred, too, so we might have both had Vivian Mildreds if we were going that routeSmile

    Vivian Charlotte sounds better
  • I love the idea of using a family member's name that was important to you, so Vivian Millie gets my vote!!

  • vivian millie doesn't flow. i love millie (i named my bunny that!) but i still like it as a short form of something old-sounding like millicent or emmeline.

::Sigh:: It does, doesn't it? I just love both names, each for different reasons. Huh?

If it does turn out to be a girl, at least we have 9 months to make a firm decision!

  • I always vote for sentimentality for the middle name, so my choice is Vivian Millie.?
  • I love the Millie because it was your Nana's name.  I would love to honour my Nana that way too.
  • I like the way Vivian Charlotte Alexander flows and looks.
  • I love the name Millie but I don't think it sounds good after Vivian (which I also love).
