Help - 11 month old won't drink anything (long)

my ds started getting sick thursday night with a stomach virus.  he vomited after having a bottle of formula and part of a yogurt for dinner (in hindsight i realize this wasn't the best food to be giving him).  then he had diarrhea for a day and a fever for the next couple of days.  his fever is finally down but the problem is he won't drink from a sippy cup no matter which kind we offer him and he won't drink from a bottle.we took him to the doctor twice and the doctor said that once he's feeling better he should start to drink again, but that was a couple days ago.

i can get him to take little sips of water every once in a great while from a cup or a glass but that's it. i've tried juice, different flavored pedialytes, poscicles and he doesn't want any of it. i've been keeping him hydrated by feeding him pureed fruits mixed with juice or cereal with fruit mixed with lots of formula.  i've managed to sneak about 4-5 ozs. of fluid in his food that way but i'm getting worried that he still won't drink.

right before he got sick he had started refusing the bottle on his own and was drinking formula and his water from a sippy.  do you think i've completely confused and freaked him out by trying to force him to drink from all these different sippies and try all different liquids?

  • I would call the dr again.  Dehydration is not good.  Check to make sure your baby is having wet diapers, if not, tell the pedi.  DS just had the stomach virus and the dr said to try Gatorade or Vitamin Water.  She said lots of babies don't like Pedialite cuz its bitter.  Could you try having him drink from a cup?  GL!

  • How are the wet diapers? If you have more than 6 hours without a wet one, then it's emergency time. If you are still seeing a wet diaper every 4-6 hours, then everything should be fine and he is getting enough fluids from meals. Keep offering water in a sippy cup.
