Pregnant after a Loss

When do they start doing internals?

My OB hasn't mentioned anything about it yet.  I go weekly.  I will see her tomorrow so I'll ask, but I was just curious when you had your first internal exam.  Thanks. :)

Re: When do they start doing internals?

  • I recall that w/DD#1 my doc decided to do an internal around 35 wks at the time he did the GBS swab.  Maybe I said something was bothering me- I don't exactly remember.  It was a good thing, because when he checked me at 36w for the first "official" internal, I was like 75% effaced & starting to dilate so he put me on half time work.  I absolutely think that him doing that saved my baby from coming a bit too early.  She ended up coming at 37.5 weeks.  With DD#2 I'm pretty sure my first was at 36w & I was already at 2cm & effacing.  She was born at 36w 6d.  I actually looked forward to my internals to see what was going on down there.  They were not uncomfortable for me at all.  Boy, long answer to a short question, eh?

  • Yep- got my first internal at 36 weeks for the group beta strep swab... then at 37-38 weeks they usually start up with internals.  Although you are carrying multiples, so it may be different :)

  • My dr. did my first internal last week at 35 weeks when he did the strep test. I started going weekly so he did another one yesterday at my 36 week appt.
  • They start at 36 weeks at my practice, but I've had them earlier due to cramping.
  • I will have my first at 36wks when I start weekly appts.
  • Mine officially start at 36 weeks. although I had one at the 33 w apt b/c of my recent trip to L&D
  • I have my GBS at 35 weeks, and then internals weekly thereafter.  Fun times!
  • My OB usually starts them at 38 weeks, but since I'm being induced early...he's starting them at 36 weeks.
