Breastfeeding

xp: nipple soreness at 8 weeks

Except for the day I switched from my hospital grade pump to a Medela PISA, I've never have nipple soreness while breastfeeding Jude. For the past two days though, I've had super sore nipples. I've put lanolin on them, which makes them nice and soft, but they still hurt. I checked Jude's mouth for signs of thrush, but he is symptom free. I'm using a nipple shield right now, because it hurts too much to breastfeed without it. His latch hasn't changed. What could be causing this? Could I have a yeast infection in my breast and my son not have thrush? Other than sore nipples and a little bit of red, I don't have any other symptoms.

  • yes, you could have thrush, but not DS.  See if your dr will put you on nystatin ointment, and pedi may give DS some too even if he is not symptomatic.  Also, I was on diflucan twice for thrush and it never worked.  I used grapefruit seed extract (not to be confused with grape seed extract)  (drugstore.com or some health food stores) to finally get rid of it, and it is totally safe while nursing, but obiously check w/ your doc first.
