1st Trimester

Got my 2nd beta back today. So confused.

For those of you who know my situation. I got my BFP on 2/13. I had dark brown spotting (very light) Wednesday Feb 25. I went in Friday for betas and an u/s. The sac that shouldve been around 6 weeks measured at 5w4d and no fetal pole within the gest sac. My betas came back from that day at 8,998.

I just went again today for my 2nd beta and it came back at 11,008. I don't know what to think. The MW said they like to see it double, but stranger things have happened. She said that unless I have bleeding or severe cramping, they're just going to schedule another u/s for March 20th.

I really wish they would get me in sooner to take a look, even next week. It just seems like such a long time to hang in limbo. I dont know whether to think happy that it went up, or be very upset that it didn't double.

Anyhow - just wanted to update those of you that were following what was happening with me.

  • I'm sure that they want to wait a few weeks so that when they do the ultra sound they will actually be able to see something...if they do it sooner they still might not be able to see much might make you feel worse or at least more confused!

    Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry they cant get you an answer sooner. I hope everything works out in the end and I will continue to keep you in my prayers.
  •  I've been following your story.  You caught my attention since we got our bfp's the same day and share the same EDD.

I know that while it was not the text book doubling they would like to see - it still did increase.  You are right, it is enough to leave you in limbo. I'd hate to use the term but remain "cautiously optimistic".

Question for you : how is your progesterone?

I'm no doctor , so for now - keep light on your feet.  Take it easy and wait for your u/s.  I don't know if your insurance covers it but if you can get another U/S or better yet another beta count - I would encourage it.

  • I'm so sorry you have to wait so long.  Something similar happened to me and my doc made me wait 3 weeks...it was hell!  I hope everything works out for you.  Keep us posted.

  • First I wouldn't worry about 5w4d v. 6w.  That's such a small difference!  And from what I hear they can get inaccurate measurements depending on how the baby is positioned.

I do think I would call back and see if you can get in earlier, just for piece of mind.  That's an awful long time to wait when things seem kind of unsure

I was going to ask about your progesterone too.  That can be a good indicator on the health of your pregnancy.

  • I can imagine how hard this weight must be.  I would try to get in earlier for an u/s just to be able to get some peace of mind.

  • There's no point getting another U/S they need to let some time pass so they can reasonably measure and compare growth.

I am surprised though that they haven't set you up for more betas. It's either that or they just are waiting to let things happen as they will.

There is no point getting in earlier. They are the professionals and they need some time for either baby to develop so they can give you an informed prognosis. Either way, there is nothing you can do except for taking it easy, drink plenty of water and get as much rest as you can.

    Good Luck.?

  • As far as know, my progesterone is fine. They haven't said anything about that and we haven't tested for it. She didn't seem concerned about it. I am very surprised they dont have me coming in for more betas.  She said that if I start to spot or bleed, they'll have me come back in for another beta draw, but until then I just need to wait.  3 weeks just seems so long to wait without at least knowing the numbers are still going up.
  • Hi,

I wish you a lot of luck with your next u/s!  The waiting between u/s is horrible...there's nothing you can do either way and it's so easy to become obsessed (checking google and the boards, etc.).  The only thing you can really do is to try to stay as positive as possible - you are pregnant today and your baby deserves as much love and positivity as possible!

I know how you feel, because I'm sort of in the same boat.  I measured about 3 days behind today with no heartbeat (they didn't mention the fetal pole or its absence).  I go back in two weeks on the 16th.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for the both of us!

I know it's not going to make you feel any better but I've had my cycles/ pregnancies very closely monitored.  For the first bfp I got - I had 6 betas done within a span of almost 2 weeks.  It was overkill and although it made me feel better - when the doctor's knew I was going to miscarry, there was nothing they could do about it.Angry  Doctor's rarely can.

That's why you're probably being told to wait the 3 weeks. Easier said than done.   I'll keep you in my thoughts and pray that those betas keep going up!

  • That number is pretty high and sometimes betas take anywhere from 48 hrs to 72 hrs to double so if you did it early that often is the problem.  Also my doctor insists on 3 betas b/c sometimes it doesn't double and sometimes it will quadruple.  The 3 betas is a better gage if you are developing right so I would ask for that 3rd beta.
