Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If you've weaned before....

If you've weaned before.... I am ready to reclaim my breasts & have started looking into weaning. I would appreciate anyone that would share their personal experience/advice on the topic! Thanks, mamas!

Re: If you've weaned before....

  • I got the flu and had to send DD to her Nana's for 4 nights. Since she wasn't getting to nurse and I was 6 months pregnant I decided to go ahead and wean. When she got home a few times she would try to go for it but I just told her that we couldn't do that anymore and would distract her and she was over it in a few days. She had been nursing up to 3 or 4 times a day when we weaned. I had a few leaking accidents but no engorgement so it wasn't too hard on my body. Now mentally is a different story. I still miss it!

  • I weaned my DS a couple weeks ago. Or I should say I had the last bfing session with him a couple weeks ago. I went really slowly with the weaning, but it worked for us and I never got engorged or had to pump off the top because of discomfort.  When I began weaning my DS was only bfing 4 times a day.  1) when he woke up, 2) mid-morning, 3) mid-afternoon and 4) right before bed.  I dropped the mid-afternoon feeding first and replaced it with a sippy of milk.  He didn't seem to care at all.  I waited another two to three weeks before I dropped another session and then it was the mid-morning session, again he didn't seem to care.  Next, I was going to drop the right after wake up session next since all the books say it's hardest to drop the one before bed and you should save that for last.  But he decided that he didn't want to nurse at night anymore and a few nights in a row when I tried to nurse him he just giggled at me!  LOL  So I kept nursing him only in the morning for another month or so because I was fighting with actually giving it up for good (I definitely didn't need to keep going that long) then I just replaced the morning feeding with a warm sippy of milk as I had done for all the other feedings and my DS just went right with it.  No issues at all.  Sorry this got so long.  I hope it is easy for you!  GL
  • I was SO nervous about it - and it ended up being SO much easier than I thought it would be. I dropped 1 nursing session at a time. - it was easier on my body and on her

At the time I was nursing 4x a day.  So I started with one of the afternoon sessions.  I did that for a week.  Then I dropped the other afternoon session.  Of course I started offering her whole milk to substitute for that loss in milk.

I thought the nighttime feeding would be the last to go, but she seemed pretty attached to the one 1st thing in the morning, so I dropped the night time feeding next (no problem.)  A week later I dropped the morning one.

As I dropped each feeding she drank more and more whole milk.  It just kind of worked out.

     HTH.  Good luck!

  • I did the same thing these other mom's did and just dropped off one feeding at a time and replaced it with a sippy or bottle of milk and he did well with it. It was a lot easier than I had thought it would be for him and that made me kidna sad...hope it goes well for you!
  • I dropped a feeding as I felt comfortable.  I didn't want to go cold turkey.
  • I was very blessed to have a self weaner for the most part. I took one feeding at a time and each week I dropped the least important feeding until he was on regular milk during the other times and nursing at night. He really didn't have a problem. He was pretty much over it. I didn't have any pain issues either. I was very lucky!

It was kind of painful.  It took a while for me to get all the milk out.  Then the girls took on a "droop" look---wasn't happy about that!  Happy I got to nurse DS for almost 9 months though and I loved the bonding part of it.
