medicine while nursing

I have a horrible cold and I'm nursing.  I know there's medicine I can take that will be just fine but I'm a little worried about my supply.  I work full time and pump 4 times a day to keep up with my 7 month old (my dh stays home).  I have milk in the freezer (enough for a few days) but I'm worried she'll catch up, which she sometimes does...even though she's on solids!

Has anyone taken cold medicines and noticed a significant reduction in their supply? OR the other way around, anyone take anything and not have any problems at all?  I feel like I can't function right now...I'm not sleeping so I'm not able to get the necessary rest to beat this and I can not function at work at all!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Re: medicine while nursing

  • Can you pump first and then take meds so that you have a few hours?  I just got done an antibiotic and had to drink LOTS of water just to try to keep up enough to feed DD.  I just now feel like I am getting my supply back.  On the other hand, if you are tired and not feeling well, that will lower your supply also, so medicine might be the better choice.  Hope you feel better!
