Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How often do you suction your baby's nose?

I only do Kelsey's when it's needed, and lately it has been at least once a day since she has a bunch of gunk in there from her cold.  I have a friend who does it every morning, every night, even if it really isn't needed.  Not sure if I should do it more often?

  • I do it when I can see or hear boogers in there.

  • a couple times a day lately. i only do it when she needs it, i don't really see the point in doing it if it's not needed...
  • oh my lordy...that poor child of your friend!  I've only suctioned my baby's nose when needed.  She's 3 months old now and I've done it a total of 5 times or so since birth.  If she has a lingering cold/stuffy nose, I could see doing it much more than that.
  • I only do it if she needs it and even then I wait until she's already a little upset b/c she HATES it.

  • Rarely.  Some doctors recommend only doing it during colds since it can cause inflammation of their nasal passages.  I usually just use saline drops and maybe a piece of tissue to get snot out.
  • ONLY when absolutely necessary!!  Nora hates it so much that I hate doing it at all... but when the poor thing can't breathe, it must be done!

  • Only when I see/hear boogies.

Babies nasal passages are pretty sensitive-I would think your friend is damaging her LO's  doing it that much and not under necessity

  • For some reason my DD is very boogerish, so we do it about every day and always get some nice big "rewards."

  • You shouldn't do it unless they are so congested that they can't breathe well. Certainly not every day. You can give them nose bleeds, cause inflamation, and irritation. Even if they are stuffy you should rinse with saline and then suction.
  • never.  our Chihuahua chewed up both of the ones we had (we took one home from the hospital LOL).  I just pick his boogies out if he has some.  Usually he laughs and smiles while I do it.  I've been told that it can make it worse if done too much.
