do you get with twins? I should has how many and how often.
I met with the OB nurse last week and she was kind of a _bitch. I am considering switching OB's. She wouldn't give me any info. I like my OB, but if they can hire a nurse like this to first meet with you when your pregnant, I may have to reconsider.
I tried to tell her that I had an u/s and was having twins. She totally didn't listen to me. It was irritating.
Re: How many u/s
ewe- what a wench! you should see a peri + the Ob.
so far i have had... other than the weekly US's with my RE from 5-8w...
one at 9w with OB
one at 12w with Peri for NTS
one at 16w with peri for cervical check
one at 20w- big US/anatomy scan
have one at 24w - growth scan + cervical check.
Plus a few little ones at the OB inbetween when it was hard to determine their HB's via doppler... they don't hesitate to whip out the US machine to get the HBs with twins.
i believe i'll start to have them ever 2w as time goes on- then every week towards the end if i remember what my OB said.
You def. want an OB office that is experienced with multiples . Have you read Dr. Luke's book yet? it's the one to read - will go over everything important with twins... diet, etc. My Ob was in total agreement with everything the book said- which made me feel good.
Dumb question what is a peri? I know nothing about being pregnant.
I am going to look for that book. What's the name of it?
Thanks, for the detailed answer! I am nervous about both of them. I just want them both healthy.

If you need a peri recommendation, I loved mine - Jeffrey Livingston. I saw him exclusively (no OB at all) and I felt like I was in good hands. He was knowledgeable, nice (a little dorky, though), and took precautions while not being alarmist. The only real drawback to him is that, at least at the time I used him, the only hospital he delivered at was University (I saw him at his office at Christ, though - just delivered at University) - which isn't the most desirable of hospitals (although, my experience was very good there).
Basically your choices for a Level III NICU are either University or Good Sam - so whatever doctor you end up choosing, make sure they deliver at one of those.
As for how many u/s - I ended up averaging about once per month. Two in the beginning from my RE. One at 14 weeks for my NT scan. The big u/s, of course. And from that point on, I had one every 4 weeks for a little while and then one every 3 weeks. Also, my peri would use the u/s to find heartbeats most of the time instead of a doppler. But those were never full on u/s where they were measuring things.
Whether you end up with an OB or peri, just make sure you feel comfortable and conifident with his/her abilities. I would highly suggest using a peri on at least a consulting basis with an OB, if you choose to go the OB route. I wouldn't go to an OB who treats a twin pregnancy like any other pregnancy.
Best of luck.
I had ultrasounds at:
20, 24, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 37, and 38 weeks that were part of the multiples protocol. This was in addition to the inital ultrasound to date the pregnancy and one around 10 weeks or so cause I fell down the stairs and was paranoid so the dr did a quick one to reassure me. You'll also have NST's, which usually start around 30 weeks, and I went to 2 a week once I hit 35 weeks. It's basically monitoring heartbeat fluctuations and movement of both babies at the same time.
A lot of women who are having multiple pg's do see a peri, but not all. I didn't. I was already being seen at a practice that handles high risk pregnancies because I have high BP. I don't feel that anything about my care was lacking and the OB's in the practice were very comfortable with handling twins. If you're already getting a bad feeling from the practice, definitely look into switching. YOu're going to be seen a lot and you will definitely want to be confidant in those taking care of you.
That is frustrating that the nurse was not helpful
.You'd think she would know more or less the OB's standard procedure with multiples, or maybe he doesn't allow her to discuss that stuff w/ patients?
My OB does u/s every 4 weeks with twins (not sure once you hit 3rd tri though, I'm sure a lot depends on complications, etc), plus I'll go to the peri for the 'big' u/s around 18 weeks or whatever. I saw him at 12 weeks & next appt will be 16 weeks but then after that I'll have an appt every 2 weeks (not u/s every 2 though, just regular appt to check in).

My OB does them at every appointment. So every 4 weeks from wks 10-22, every 2 weeks 24-30 and now every week. I see a peri also so there are some additional growth ultrasounds in there. I go to the OB this week and I'm pretty sure it will be my 23rd u/s this pregnancy, including the 5 or so I had before I was released from my RE.
That totally stinks about your nurse. That'd make me think twice also!
After a PCOS dx, 18 months of trying, 3 rounds of clomid and 2 follistim IUIs our babies are here!
you SO should switch! ugh!
I had them at
6w1d- to check for multiples,
8w- to see if baby C was still there,
12w- to see their heartbeats b/c they were having a hard time finding both
13w- for the NT scan,
19w- the BIG u/s,
23w- growth scan
27w- growth scan,
30w- growth scan,
33w- growth scan,
34w- to do a biophysical profile,
34w1d- to check for positioning (the day I delivered b/c my water broke)
i saw a peri exclusively, due to the fact that i was originally pg with triplets. i had so many i can't even remember lets see..
7weeks-RE
8 weeks-1st OB with nurse practioner?
9 weeks-meeting with OB
12 weeks-NT scan
14 weeks-growth scan
18 weeks-Big U/S
then i had them every 2 weeks, because i was having appts every 2 weeks, and consistently having contractions..most were on the crappy machine in the exam room, my doc was really cool, and would always take a quick look just to make sure everything was good
soooo different this time around already! ?
Joey, Ronnie, and Audrey,
