Can identicals have own sac and placenta?

I posted this on preemies but just watned to see if anyone had anythign to add...My boys look exactly and I mean exactly the same.  They are preemies, born at 30 weeks and are now 2 weeks old.  We did IVF and put 2 embroys back and they both had own sac and placent so we just assumed fraternal.  I'm sure they probably are and just too tiny and will start looking difrerent as they get bigger but could they be identical?

  • I read this somewhere, they can depending how early they split. Mine are sharing the same sac.

  • Yes they can.  If they have the same blood type too, I might start thinking about having their DNA tested.
  • Yes, it is possible.  See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin.  Identical twins can have separate placentas if they split within 3 days after conception.

  • mm well since we put 2 5day blasts back then i guess its not possible! question answered! thanks!

  • Yes, they can.  There was a woman on another board who had 3 boys with their own sacs and placentas - she was told that they were fraternal.  Turns out that two of them were identical.  She had them DNA tested.
  • It's definitely possible if the egg splits early enough.   We had assumed ours were fraternal because of the two sacs we saw at the initial u/s, but the dr told us that id twins were still a possibility.  Ended up not mattering as they're a boy and a girl.  Of course, that doesn't stop people from asking us if they're identical anyway.
  • We have di di twins.  Two doctors said they were fraternal b/c of the way the sacs/placentas were.  Since they looked a lot alike we did the DNA test and they are identical.  We got our test through affiliated genetics.
  • Mine had their own amniotic sac, but one mega placenta.  All tiny babies look similiar :P You can always do the DNA test but I would wait- mine didn't really start looking the same until they were older. We did the DNA test at 11m.

  • We believe that my boys may be semi-identical, that is to say they started out identical and split so early they developed different placentas and sacs.  And the reason they look so different right now is that Evan had severe IUGR so that it was like eating and breathing through a straw instead of an umbilical cord, thus he did not grow in the same way that Cameron did.  We will not have the DNA test done though because it's just not that important for us to find out.

FYI... They have the same blood type and so far all the same allergies to the same medications.  Twins do not run in the family at all, and we checked back many generations through family members on both sides of my maternal and paternal line and DH's family.  And we did not have fertility assistance.  Anything is possible.

  • up to 4 days after conception you get di-di twins

between 4 and 8 days after conception you get mono-di

anything after 8 days past conception and they are mono-mono

  • BTW...I have a Carter and Dylan too!!  We have Carter Benjamin and Dylan Tyler
