Constipated... Need something to help...Now...

I've been constipated throughout the weekend and I just can't take this anymore. Is there something I can take to help me??!! I've gotten all of the "drink plenty of water... eat more fiber... excerise regularly..." Blah-blah blah... What can I do now?? Is there something I can take?

Re: Constipated... Need something to help...Now...

  • Metamucil is the only thing my doctor said was ok. I also asked my doc for a prenatal vitamin that has stool softener in it.

  • the thing that helps me is a cup of HOT water. It doesn't have to be tea or anything like that but it works for me. I read it in one of Dr. Gott's articles. The warmth is supposed to stimulate your bowels or something like that.
  • Have you tried colace?
  • This is torture for me, but eating McDonald's is the only thing that can get things moving.
  • A cup of coffee sends me running for the bathroom every time without fail.

  • You can take a stool softener before bed, and drink a warm glass of prune juice to boot...I had impacted stool last week- most miserable experience of my life- stool softener and even senokot wouldn't work (you can tak senokot if need be- nurse advised me to take that when stool softener didn't work- I had gone 6 days..) Ultimately, I had to have an enema so def take stool softener tonight w/ warm prune juice!!! Good luck!

Hah!  Too funny!  I remember when i was pg with DD, all it took was a McDonalds double cheeseburger... don't know why.

Um, my MD said I could take Correctol, that was safe... I would check first and make sure your MD gives you the OK, but it sure helped me out.

  • i drink metamucil (pink lemonade flavor) every morning and take 3 colace every night before bed.....

  • I have the same problem, even though I drink a LOT of water everyday, I refuse to take laxatives of any sort. Yesterday I couldn't take it anymore and I drank hot water with lemon in it and ate 5 prunes, it was very successful this morning.

  • Colace ...it's a GODSEND.  I take it even when I'm not to keep me "regular".  It has been amazing getting me through.
  • The warm water is good advice. also consider taking colace regularly to help ease the issue. For now Metamucil followed by warm water

  • I was tried colace too, my dr says its ok. I have used it a couple of times and it works pretty quickly.  Good luck!
  • You can take a stool softener, as long as it doesn't have a laxative in it. I use Colace and down a glass of prune juice. I hate the juice, but I'd rather deal with the taste than be constipated.
  • Prune juice works for me but if you need more than that, Colace is safe to take.

  • Add Activa, apples and shredded wheat to your diet.  Works for me.
  • Club Soda with some lime in it will get things moving again!
  • There is one laxatative that my dr said was ok to take. It's Senkot and it worked great for me. Only thing is...it took about 12 hours to get things going.

I did all the stuff you said, and continue to do it, but I needed relief right away!

  • I was really constipated last month to the point where I was sick, so I asked my dr and she ok'd an enema...I never had one before, but it got things moving again. After that, I take a stool softener everyday and try to drink enough liquids. The warm water/hot tea/prune juice did not work for me. :( I hope you have relief soon, I know how miserable it is!
  • I feel your pain woman!

I have been dealing with this for three weeks now and it has been downright PAINFUL!

Here's what I've been doing (after two trips to the doctor for help)

I eat two-four prunes in the morning, bran cereal, I buy fiber one yogurt and fiber one granola bars.  I eat that EVERY day and drink tons of water.  I also take two stool softeners and two fiber con tablets every day.  My doc also prescribed some glycerin suppositories.  Good luck, it's dreaded and painful.
