changing table a necessity?

Any of you ladies not buying a changing table for baby?  Our bedroom is upstairs, while the nursery will be downstairs (only 2 bedrooms in the house).  We plan to go the bassinet at night route for a while to minimize the upstairs-downstairs trips.  But most of our living takes place upstairs, so even after baby starts sleeping in the crib, is it worth it to spend money on a changing table when a lot of diapers will be changed upstairs?

    we are just going to by the changing table pad that goes on top of a dresser... We bought a dresser that accommodates for a changer on top- but we aren't planning on buying a separate piece of furniture for this... i don't think you need to at all..

    i'm not sure if we are yet or not- kind of just depends on the set we choose. but,i don't think it's necessary. if we only have a dresser (a lower one) we'll just stick a changing pad on top of it.

    We are planning on doing the combo unit also (dresser/changing table). We have limited space in the baby room.

    We did the dresser changer combo.... it has three drawers on one side and then a door on the other so you can put changing necessities in there... we have limited room in the nursery so this was a must for us :)

    I think changing tables are a ridiculously useless piece of furniture. I've used one maybe 3 times my entire life and I've been a nanny for YEARS... We are just going to put a changing pad on top of the dresser. Why waste the money/space on something that won't get used after they turn like 6 months and start crawling and rolling around.

    We already got our furniture and we didn't get a changing table, just a dresser that has the right measures and we already got the changing pad too...I think it's waisting your money, I also have friends that never even got the changing pad, they just change their babies on top of their bed...and they're all fine!

    For the nursery we got just the combo dresser unit.  However, I was thinking about the concept and realized that the dresser in our room would work for a changing table as well.  Could you slap a changing pad on a low dresser in your room to accomodate changing?

    You don't need one at all! In the grand scheme of things, you don't use it for THAT long for it to be worth it. We used one of those combos, too. And we don't even use that ALL the time. You'll change the baby in many, many places. LOL

    i've had so many people tell me they are a waste, so we aren't doing a traditional changing table, but we are ordering the da vinci kalani dresser and a changing pad to go on top of it. also, the pnp we registered for has a bassinet and changing table built in so that will suffice while she is in our room for the first few months.....

    I would say yes. We bought the changing table/dresser also. this way we could use it for other things as well.. buy a cheap one if you arent sure

    Our plan as of right now is to buy the changing table pad, and use it on top of a dresser.  We are figuring that after a few years, a changing table wouldn't have much use (unless we turned it into a shelf), but a dresser will be useful forever.  The changing table in the baby's room will only be used at night time anyway....we do most of our living downstairs (bedrooms only upstairs).  We plan on having a Pack N Play downstairs, which will work as the changing station down there.  More convenient for us when we are home, and more convenient for the grandparents when they are watching the baby during the day.  (MIL and my father have awful knees and won't be able to go upstairs easily). 

    So I would say no, it is not a necessity.  A dresser would be much more useful.

    We aren't planning to get one. The pack'n'play has one on it if we really feel that we need to use one, but everyone I've talked to has said they're a waste of space and money and that you eventually just start to change the baby wherever you happen to be. I'm just planning to get a diaper/wipes caddy or basket and I'll keep a changing pad in there to throw down on the floor/couch/bed when I change the baby.
