Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How long does your 6 week old sleep at night?

How long does your 6 week old LO sleep at night?  Our DD is sleeping about 2-3 hours between feedings but once we hit about 3am, it's all downhill.  She may sleep 45 min. and then wakes fussy (I think she HATES sleeping on her back).  She's in her bassinet now in our room- we are thinking of braving the crib in her room very soon.

I've seen posts about babies sleeping all night -- I'd be happy with 4-5 hours at this point!!  Any advice you have on how we get there would be fantastic!!  Thanks!

  • at 6w, DD was waking at exactly every 4 hours to eat. at 7w, she was STTN. there was no in between.

  • My son was up every two hours at night until he was 3 months old--and then he was up every 3-4. No advice for you, just know that you're not alone and it's more normal for babies to be up frequently during the night than to not be.

  • DD will go to bed anytime between 10:30 & midnight...wakes up to feed around 5-5:30am, and then sleeps till 9 or 10am.

  • At 6 weeks, DD was sleeping in 4-5 hour stretches.  I do believe that with young babies, there's no way to force STTN - some are just ready for it and do it sooner, like anything else.

That being said, have you tried swaddling at all?  That really helped us.  We started around 8 weeks and she went from sleeping 4-5 hours to sleeping 7-9 and then 8-12 in a matter of a few days. If you haven't tried swaddling yet, get a SwaddleMe blanket and give it a go.

  • i should have mentioned that DD started STTN so quickly because we started using the miracle blanket. now at 4 months, we dont swaddle anymore and she is still STTN.
  • DD is 8 weeks and still wakes up about every 2-3 hrs. I was at my wits end in the earlier weeks because she was waking even more often than that. I had a feeling it might be the bassinet so I started putting her in her swing and she sleeps much better. There really just is no way to force one that young to STTN.
  • Swaddling is our best friend!  DD was sleeping 3-4 hour stretches and waking herself up with her arms.  We starting swaddling more this week (6 weeks) and she was going from 10/11 to 6/7.
