Mini-pill users, come in

My doctor prescribed Nora-Be at my 6 week visit and I've yet to take it because I was worried it would dry my BM supply. I'm at the point now where I might start to wean, so if it dried up, it dries up.

I'm reading through the paperwork that comes with the prescription and it says that it prevents the release of an egg in 50% of women. This doesn't make me feel all that secure.

So I'm wondering:

1. Did it affect your milk supply?

2. Do you use a back up form of protection, just in case?

3. If you're using a back up anyway, is it worth it to take the mini-pill with all the extra side effects?

4. (I'll call my doctor tomorrow about this, but out of curiosity) I haven't gotten my first period pp yet... do I have to wait for that to start the pill?

 Thanks!!

Re: Mini-pill users, come in

  • I have the minipill only because it isn't supposed to affect milk supply. When I wean I will switch to the regular pill.

    It hasn't affected my supply.

We've been using backup for the 1st 6 weeks, dr. said it takes that long to be effective. Will probably use for a full 8.

I haven't noticed side effects, but just post partum life is an adjustment.

Haven't gotten my period yet. I started it 3 weeks pp.

  • I went on it for 3 weeks.  The first week I had a drop in my supply, so I started pumping once a day in addition to feeding, my supply is back to normal...  However, I went off it as of two days ago because the acne it was causing, simply made me cry.  My skin got so bad, I didn't want to go anywhere.  Within two days there has been a total change.  So we are just going to be careful and keep my fingers crossed.  As far as waiting for your first period, nope, because you can ovulate now, and risk pregnancy...
  • I use a different brand of mini-pill, but here are my answers:

    1.  No affect on my supply even now.

    2.  Kind of--we still pull and pray as a back up.

    3.  That's up to you, really, and your comfort level with your current bc.

    4.  No--you can start the pill whenever (though waited until a Sunday just to make it easier to remember the dates).

  • I didn't notice a change in supply from taking it.  I used backup for the first 4 wks only.  I started taking it the day the dr gave it to me.  Good luck.
  • i use Camila...

It hasnt affected my supply--I have an oversupply so I would have noticed. I didnt used back up, but Dh was gone for the first 3 wks and the first time we had sex we used a condom. Other than that no back up now. U can start taking it whenever you want. The side effects have been acne and a little nausea at first. IMO its worth it.

Oh and if an egg is release the pill makes your uterus a not so great enviroment for it to implant if it does get fertilized, and it makes it hard for a sperm to get through as well.

  • Mine's not the same name but it's still a mini-pill. My supply is fine, and we never used a backup of protection. And no pp period for me yet.

  • 1. nope - that is the point of taking the mini pill vs the regular pill

    2. BFing =P ?Doctor said that combined with BFing, the minipill is about as effective as the regular pill.

    3. I have taken the pill for 14 years. ?The only side effect with the minipill I have seen is I have to take it everyday instead of 3 weeks on, 1 week off =P

    4. NO!!!! ?Minipill DOES NOT?regulate?your period like the regular pill. ?If you don't get a period it is because you are breastfeeding. ?Some women NEVER get a period while breastfeeding.?

    Good luck!?
