Breast Pump- Rent or Buy

I plan on breast feeding my baby but I've heard that it might be better to first rent a breast pump (hospital grade) instead of buying in case breast feeding doesn't quite work out.  For those who did rent, where did you rent from and what's the average price?

Re: Breast Pump- Rent or Buy

  • I bought the Lansinoh Double Electric and I have been extremely pleased with it.

  • I had the same thought before I delivered. ?Ask the hospital where you will be delivering. ?I know woman's hospital rents them for around $50/$60 a month. ?I ended up waiting until after I delivered to see if I would need to rent one and ended up buying the same one PAGAS has (Target and BRU sell them). ?

  • I was going to rent one, but when DH and I sat down to do a cost analysis on rent vs. buy, it made more financial sense to buy one for us.  You can always resell the actual machine (not the parts you used because that's just gross!) on Craigslist or sell it to a friend if you decide not to use it.  Breast pumps are expensive and I'm sure the market for used ones is huge.

I would buy, personally.  I have the Medela Pump in Style and I love it.

  • I'm renting a Medela Symphony from the hospital for $60 a month.

Another vote here for the Lansinoh.

  • I say rent. I rented mine from the Women's hospital, $60 a month and I'm glad I did. I planned on bf'ing and did so in the hospital, but my milk never came in as much as I pumped and fed DS. I had to switch to formula and I am glad I hadn't spent all that money on a pump. Once you know you can bf I would definitely buy one.

ditto the Lansinoh - I got it from drugstore.com when it was on sale

I will say that I got a manual (Avent Isis) as a gift before he was born and waited to buy the electric until later.?

  • I rented and was glad that I did..  I had a really hard time BFing and an awful time pumping...  I really needed the hospital grade...  Also, I didn't end up BFing as long as planned...  I turned the pump in after 3 months...  My insurance paid for the rental....
  • Another option- Call your insurance company.  if they provide a "moms to babies" or "pregnancy" services you may be eligible to get a free breast pump or one at a great reduced price.  I know our insurance company offers them for groups that have the program.
  • I rented because I needed my freezer supply to be up for a surgery 1 mo PP.  We got it from Women's for $60/month.  I now have a pump I do not rent (a Medela from a friend and a Lansiboh handpump I really like) and will say I saw a dip in the amount I could pump with the medela.  I think next time I will rent for 1 month as well, just because I had success doing it that way this time (knowing the success is likely wholly unrelated but being superstitious anyhow).
  • Excellent- I'm actually delivering at the Women's Hospital and taking their breast feeding class.  I'll definitely have to look into all the options- thanks for all the advice!!
  • do we have exact due date, april 13? ?I'm a Woman's too. ?Hopefully new wing will be open soon! ?

?Another option if you do buy and end up not needing it, you can always resell on ebay or craigslist. ?I've seen a ton of used pumps. ?Looks like they go for half their value at least. ?I used a medela pump in style last time but was never abble to actually pump much out....so I may rent a pump this time since they are supposed to be more effective. ?Its really hard to know in advance. ?gl!

  • i rented my pump at the motherhood center, you have option to rent for just a week or months, their prices are based on how long you rent....something around $70 a month...you can check them out www.motherhoodcenter.com
